For most bands success is preceded by a lengthy spell playing at toilet
venues, but for Groove Armada the good stuff came rather more easily.
Early single At The River was picked up by then Radio One DJ Zoe Ball
and within weeks its atmospheric chimes were everywhere.
"It was used on loads of films and adverts and we reached a high
level pretty quickly," said Tom Findlay, one half of the band
(along with Andy Cato).
"Then came I See You Baby. We sounded fresh and that made the
difference."
Since the late 1990's Groove Armada have a had a string of successful
albums culminating in the hallmark of a successful musical career
- a Best Of.
"We're glad we got there but it puts the pressure on for the
next album. After a Best Of you're next album has got to be good or
your finished."
Work on it will begin in the Summer. Before that Tom is taking time
out to move house and prepare for The Bully, which came about because
of his friendship with Sean Holbrook of the promoters Simple.
"I used to buy my music from Sean at Black Records. He sold me
so many great tunes I though it was a way of saying thankyou,"
said Tom.
He'll go with the funky house and disco theme but believes the dance
scene is heading in a different direction.
"Everything is going back to Acid House. Around London these
days you'll find fliers with just a phone number like in the early
1990s."
Groove Armada's next CD will reflect this and be more raw and the
Oxford show could also have bearing.
"You can measure the trends by playing DJ sets. I'm hoping it'll
give me a good idea into what people are listening too right now."
*Doors open at 9pm on February 5. Entry is on a first there, first
in basis. The Bullingdon Arms is at 162, Cowley Road |
