BBC and Corporate Responsibility
Our role as a public service broadcaster is structured around six Public Purposes. All of the BBC's work aims to fulfil at least one of these purposes. This website and our Corporate Responsibility Performance Report reflect the purposes and how we are fulfilling them through beyond broadcast activities. The six Public Purposes are:
- Sustaining citizenship and civil society
- Promoting education and learning
- Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence
- Reflecting the UK's nations and regions, and communities
- Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK
- Supporting emerging communications
In addition, we are committed to managing our business in a responsible way, and this means many different things - including working to reduce our environmental footprint, treating our staff well, connecting with diverse audiences and supporting charities. In 2011, we achieved a score of 98% and Platinum ranking in Business in the Community’s Corporate Responsibility Index, which was the highest in the category of Media and Entertainment.
Reporting on our performance
As an internationally recognised public service broadcaster, we aim to be open and transparent in all that we do. We produce an annual Corporate Reponsibility Performance Report aligned to the BBC's Annual Report and Accounts - you can read this year's report by clicking on the link below.
Later in the year, we'll also be looking at specific areas of our work in more detail and you'll be able to read about them in quarterly supplements. The first, on Sustainability, will be available in the autumn.

Update - Beyond the Broadcast
To accompany our annual BBC Corporate Responsibility Performance Report, we also publish quarterly newsletter supplements which provide a focused update on a specific aspect of our corporate responsibility work. Across the year, topics covered include the approach to our environmental impacts, how we use outreach to help us meet our six Public Purposes and our work in the charities sector.
