Programme shown on November 25th

I would like to congratulate all involved for this particular edition of See Hear.An excellent programme as far as I was concerned. Why? I have been a viewer for some years now and have to say that I have not always understood the content of the programme due to the use of certain signs, many which have been imported from America/Scotland, traditional signs seems to have vanished from the screen. Having said that this last week your edition of See Hear was refreshing for me as the use of traditional signs football, start etc were used. I can honestly say this is the first time I have fully understood the whole programme.I am sure I am not alone in these thoughts and have wondered why these signs were 'shelved' as they are an important part of our language and should be maintained. Why is there a need to replace them when they serve so many so well.Well done and please can you keep this up!

Blue Tooth hearing aids

I saw an article in a paper yesterday about the new hearing aids on offer from specsavers, has anyone else heard of these or got them? Apparently they are blue tooth like mobile phones, you can increase or decrease the volume to hear the television, mobile or land line phone to suit yourself without disturbing (or driving mad) others. Sounds very interesting but also very expensive int he region of £1,540.00 (ish) each!!

3MW

You probably have no idea what the topic I'm talking about. But for you info, I caught these small stories at the end of Channel 4 news over the past week. They are based round a deaf lady who gives an insight to how things appear to her. One time she went for hynosis to stop smoking. She was asked to close her eyes and of course it is zero use that way! Her mum asked when she came out 'why are you still smoking?' She replied..I couldn't hear a thing!Over all I thought it was quite well done I think and it was refreshing to see hearing loss/deafness aired on prime time TV albeit without any publicity that I know of. I looked at the CH4 web site but the editions on offer are too far back. Perhaps an email to the contact will work wonders? To be fair, I have contaced them about CH4 news being w/o subbies any they did respond (and fix the problem).

Draft letter to RNID Trustees.

Comments and recommendations for improvement welcome:DearI am a deaf member of RNID and I am writing to express my unease at a number of ways in which the charity operates. My first concern is that of accountability at RNID. The standard response that I have been given by independent parties is that I should liaise with the board. After asking John Low on how to go about this, he advised me to contact board members individually by post via Featherstone Street. This seems rather cumbersome and I think, in the age of internet, there are better ways to expedite a feedback process. I see the role of trustee as rather like that of an MP – where the interests of constituents are carried forward through surgeries/consultation and that is what I think should happen at RNID. Simply giving out information unilaterally in the form of impact reports is inadequate. My other main area of concern is that of the employment of deaf and hard of hearing people at RNID in general and especially at senior management level. A lot of the vacancies advertised by RNID seem to carry a stipulation of at least two years experience. Whilst normally this would be fine, it is disregarding the fact, which is often shown through RNID’s own research, that deaf and hard of hearing people are less likely through no fault of their own to have this experience. The lack of deaf and hoh people at SMT (senior management team) level seems to contradict many of RNID’s claims and aspirations; it is a dramatic vote of no confidence in deaf people if they are deemed unfit to hold a single vacancy at the highest level of a deaf organisation. How can RNID champion our suitability to work at all levels in other organisations if their own record is poor? How can it be in the best interests of deaf people not to speak and act for themselves and control their own affairs?I would respectfully urge you to take on board these concerns.Yours sincerely,

well, SEE HEAR did ask us today ! Despite the fact we cannot hear the singing or the music, or follow the melody ? If I could see deaf culture in deaf sign singing I might go with it, but I have no time for deaf signing hearing music, I can get the same benefit via text....but at least I have pre-existingmemory and can fit some melodies and instriuments in, but it is not intrincically a 'deaf' thing is it ? What is ? As soon as I see it, it is mimickry. OK if that is what they want, but WHERE is the cultural aspect ?

Also, I tried keeping it going by bringing an ex-employee to deal with the communication and sales side of it, but he was no good.I really need to get back into my trade, which I excel at. It's just my damn ears that don't work!!Ive also had some businesses turn me away on me telling them about my hearing problems...signs..Do I just bite the bullet, and tell this company the whole truth and risk them turning me away?Hard times....signs..

Should hearing teach BSL Level One?

Hello, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Yvonne and I am a Communication Support Worker for Deaf Students at a college in Birmingham. I have been asked by the college if I would like to teach their students BSL Level One as part of their enrichment courses. As I am sure you are aware, I am hearing and am at present studying my NVQ3 which I am due to complete in June this year.I would like to teach BSL Level One as I feel the more people who are deaf aware the better but also feel that I maybe "stepping on Deaf peoples toes" so to speak.Should I decide to take up this opportunity I will hold my NVQ 3 in British Sign Language, will have attended the CACDP Tutor/Assessor Workshop for Level One and will be starting a recognised teaching qualification (7407) in September.I would like to hear from anyone with a view on this Deaf/deaf/HOH/Hearing as I will be using this information as part of my portfolio evidence for my NVQ and of course will influence my final decision on whether to become a BSL Level One tutor. Please also bear in mind that I have no intention of teaching any further BSL qualifications, just Level One.Look forward to hearing from you.Yvonne

My hearing has slowly deteriorated and had a DDA resonable adjustment made and was moved from the call centre to the back office (processing). I still have to use the phone to take calls from customers. I had a call this week where a customer complained. My manger informed me today that several colleagues complained about my "tone" and that it was rude. Having a hearing impairment means i'm not always aware of my tone. The customer didn't mention that I was rude, he was complaining about something else so i'm sure he would have.Feel rubbish that my colleagues are talking about me behind my back and have a problem with me.Am annoyed they didn't speak to me instead of escalating to my manager. Can anyone suggest a way forward?

It's Sat night, my son is 'sleeping over' at a friend's house so we settle down to watch Che, parts 1 and 2. Described as 'a masterpiece' and 'a cinematic experience beyond the extraordinary' I'm looking forward to watching my birthday present. 'Spanish with English subtitles' it says and they're not wrong. When the characters are speaking Spanish, we have subs, however, when anyone, including the narrator, is speaking in English, the subs disappear.Frustrating or what!

LRC Files

I am an 18 year old girl who loves to keep up to date with the latest music. I wear 2 hearing aids and as a result I rely on things such as subtitling to be able to watch DVDs and TV programmes. I've heard you can download LRC files which play the words to the song on your mp3 player as you are listening to it. I have searched the web with no hope. Does anyone know of any sites where you can download up to date LRC Files-even if they include a charge. any help would be appreciated as its really annoying not been able to sing along to songs with my friendsCharlene

Have I got a deaf brain now??

Im finding it very odd, as I feel my brain is turning into mush potato lol!My hearing is declining, and as it does so I find myself struggling sometimes to talk coherently. Is this due to the lack of sensory perception my ears used to give me? Hence since I don't 'hear' clear speech anymore, is my brain getting lazy with speech?I can still hear myself speak, but when it comes to listening to other people, I often miss the consonants and then the games start lol! When Im communicating, I sometimes get my words mixed up and have to really think about what Im going to say, which is abit worrying to say the least! It feels like words that are pronouced in my head are becoming less clear and more fuzzy..,.abit like what Im picking up from watching tv etc..Is this common amongst deafened folk??

Trust .Vs. Internet Dating

Hey I'm very wary of the Internet world as a whole & its safety risks. But I have been talking to someone for a year now.We have had eachothers number from more or less day one which was a risk for me, passing over my number. So we text regularly...but we have meant to meet the first time, I was put on hold I guess and the second time when travel tickets were purchased it was around the time of swine and he collapsed as also he has hypeglacemia which means often his immune system is weak. Now I have put an awful amount of trust into believing he is, who he says he is by pictures, unlike me, I have a webcam, please could I have some advice or some of your experiences as Im finding it hard, I have been warned by a friend that said, anyone can say they are deaf on msn, he is goodlooking so thats even why after a year I worry everything is too good to be true? Now he says he hasnt the money to commute yet he attended a party at the weekend, im confused.

Deaf Clubs - Are Visits From BSL Learners Appropriate

Hi all,I am currently doing BSL Level 1 at my local college and in order to obtain more practise in signing I wondered if it might be appropriate to visit a deaf club, at first to observe but then perhaps to join in?What would peoples thoughts on this be? I don't want to offend anyone but would like to get more practise. Many thanks!!
