Could this be the invention we've all waited for?

I have a suggestion. Nobody out here has the faintest idea of how subtitles are made. Why don't you explain on See Hear?
We know that Aunty does live ones and advance subtitles but we have no idea how this is accomplished.
I gather there is voice recognition software and an operator involved in subbing but HOW are the titles then inserted into the signal?
Why do the subs sometimes linger on the screen?
Why can't we have different colours?
When films are presubtitled why do some stations not include them?
How hard is it to add subtitles to a show at the time of making? How is it done? How long does it take? How much does it cost?
You at the BBC have all this on your doorstep. It will cost you buttons to make an information piece and I think a lot of people would be very interested in how subbing is done. This is a reply to this message.

Hi Andy - thanks for the suggestion. We did a film about how subtitling is done with voice recognition a year or so ago.

That's right but it didn't go into a lot of detail.
A year is a long time in technology, after all we have gone digital since then. This is a reply to this message.
