This week's programme has something for everyone. There's a hard-hitting interview with Jackie Ballard, Chief Executive of the RNID; James Merry, animator; hearing pop singer Sia who uses American Sign Language in her most recent video. With Radha on holiday this week, we have Lilli Risner standing in alongside Memnos.
Jackie Ballard Interview
The See Hear Messageboard has been a hive of activity recently with people discussing how well the RNID is being run, and whether it is still relevant to the majority of people from the Deaf community. The RNID's Chief Executive Jackie Ballard has now been in the job for almost a year and she's fielding a series of tricky questions from our reporter, Mark Nelson, in advance of this Friday's Annual General Meeting.

James Merry Profile
Animation has changed a lot over recent years with the advent of affordable computer software. See Hear meets animator James Merry who has experienced this change first hand and now does all his work on a computer. One of the more recent projects he has worked on is Channel 4's Fonejacker series. He invited us to his offices to show us the process involved in bringing Fonejacker's characters to life.
Have a look at his blog for some lovely pictures (warning, contains tasteful nudity):

Sia Profile
Over the years many singers have tried incorporating sign language into their performances: Faithless, Geri Halliwell, Sinead O'Connor - even Danni Minogue. But is it just a publicity stunt, or are there other more noble reasons behind the use of sign in music videos and performance? See Hear sneaked into Australian singer Sia's dressing room for a quick chat, and to find out her reasons for using sign language in her video for her latest single, 'Soon Will Be Found'.

The Ballard one looks interesting, did she get questions sent in ? basically the RNID ignored all mine...
I'm beginning to think the deaf aren't wanted...This is a reply to this message.

How did you submit your queries to the RNID, MM?
And are you a fully paid up member? This is a reply to this message.
-
Nice one, SH, I'm looking forward to that. I just hope some of the messageboard questions have been asked.
And are you a fully paid up member?
It doesn't matter whether MM is member or not. RNID represent all nine million deaf and hoh people in the UK, not just the members, so MM has absolutely every right to ask RNID whatever he likes, as does every single deaf and hoh person in the country. This is a reply to this message.

I have to second his assertion about emails. Not only that but I can vouch for the fact that many people have told me the same thing. They do have a bit of a poor reputation for not answering emails.
If you search back through these hallowed portals you will find many remarks by people such as Tim that their emails are ignored. I have personally experienced this recently, having a small query about my membership account I emailed the membership address. Still waiting.
I have in the past accused the RNID of being bad communicators. I just don't think they work hard enough at it.
For example if you ring the general enquiries number the textphone does not work. I rang them a couple of weeks ago via Typetalk to discuss that Guardian Deaf piece with them.
I had the greatest difficulty in getting my message over and getting through to somebody in authority. If it's that hard, people just won't bother! So I feel that the RNID needs to work on its customer relations. Incidentally none of the people I spoke to on my calls the other week introduced themselves properly. This avoids accountability. I can't report anyone because I don't know who they are. I can't tell by the tone of voice!!
The correct form for answering the phone by the RNID is for them to say " Hello this is the RNID and I am Jane / John how can I help you?".This is a reply to this message.

I was asked if I wanted to be a member, I said I couldn't do that until I felt confident the RNID were willing to listen to, include and consult the deaf, I got no such assurance. Attempting to 'buy me off' in effect to shut up. As regards to what 'right' I have to ask things of the RNID, I do so on two levels, one, as a user of their services (Which gives me perfect right to comment or suggest on how to improve that services I receive), and two, as a deaf person whom the RNID claim to represent.
What is representation, without recognition ? without inclusion ? without acceptance ? without respect ? and without an avenue for expression ? I'm unwilling to send them 15 quid a year to be patronised.... The RNID is just a branch of the public service information body, not a charity, it was bought off to 'serve us on the cheap'. Campaigns about music and photos are a swipe at the deaf, they are saying watch out ! or you will end up like them, thanks for nothing really !
All this is NOT the RNID's remit, we should be spending money on empowerment of deaf people, not more dependency, if the aim is not to empower, then support is pointless, indeed keeping deaf people in their 'place'.
It's what you get with failed railtrack executives and failed politicians looking for an cushy job... and an OBE..
The RNID has systematically closed down all but e-mail access, and, publicly on SH promised 'exciting new developments' in September, we saw nothing, least of all an open 'surgery' or blog we can offer representation or comment to, and a glossy magazine obsessed with fluff and hearing aids... that is guilty of refusing to publish comment on RNID services or lack of deaf input... and is using professional spin doctors to paint the deaf as 'trying to undermine the RNID's good causes'. Good for who ? the RNID ?
Scotland Ireland and Wales with NO autonomy ? the RNID keeps control in Featherstone street like some baronial feudal system....All this and much of the same were offered up to Ms Ballard, she just do not want to know. The RNID trustees overrule the membership, so they are nothing more than a rubber stamp to whatever they are told too, and the scandal of next to no deaf at the RNID, fobbed off by Ms Ballard as "Whiners and should go somewhere else if they don't like it..", was as near enough a declaration deaf are not wanted at the RNID, as you will ever get. Let Ms Ballard answer those concerns, she won't !
What's up with the mute RNID membership as well ? 35K hard of hearing ? with no interest either in deaf matters.... and attendingthe AGM mostly sycophants, audiologists, and those employed by the RNID, but NO grass roots, heaven forbid they get a voice...This is a reply to this message.

Well - we did ask a lot of questions, some of which were taken from this board and from emails.
Please do let us know what you thought of Jackie's answers after you've seen today's programme. This is a reply to this message.

As luck would have it my PVR stalled today and didn't record See Hear.
There's no subtitles on the iplayer again and nobody seems to have told Jackie Ballard how to speak to deaf people because I can barely lipread her.
tcch! This is a reply to this message.

Yet again, I'm on case with iPlayer team. They're trying to resolve this issue and I'll post the link as soon as it's subtitled.
There is a link you can use to complain, you know... and it doesn't involve See Hear. This is a reply to this message.

It's very well hidden, isn't it?
