Some of you might remember I had a crash in my Fiancees car on SAturday the 7th (rom which I'm still in a fair amount of pain). I have just got off the phone from the repairers and they have declared it a total loss and said that the insurance company will be in touch.
I'm in shock. This was the worst accident I have ever been in and we kinda expected the car to be written off but it's still a bit of a shock to hear it.
And I feel guilty. I've never written a car off before and it had to be my Fiancees as well, who has more than enough on her plate at the moment.
Her last car was written off by her ex-husband when he decided to go racing down a country lane and ended up spinning on a wet patch and reversing through a stone waill into a field, before having to have the fire brigade cut the roof off to get him out. NOw I've wriotten this one off. One ofher friends made a comment about it being her turn to write her own car off next time.
Oooooooooooooohhhh!!! I don't know whether I'm coming or going at the moment. And the other guy wasn't even insured - the Police and our insurer have said it was his fault as he pulled out in front of me without looking but even so.
Sorry folks, I'm not even sure why I'm posting this here now I thinkl about it. -
Oh I forgot - if anyone is interested in pictures I am on Facebook under the name Dan McIntyre and there is an album of photos called "My Crash, Von's Car".

Oh dear Dan, what a nightmare.
Dont feel guilty, accidents happen, and it wasn't your fault.
I'm a bit annoyed for you that the other driver wasn't insured. Make sure you keep details of how the accident affected you, as you may be able to get compensation from the criminal injuries compensation scheme I think, as its an offence to drive without insurance. A wild shot I know, but if you suffer because of whiplash for a length of time then you may be able to claim something. Only mentioning this because someone I know had symptoms for over a year and hadn't recorded it, lost their job and couldn't get anywhere regarding compensation, which is frustrating. This is a reply to this message.

It is a shock. I wrote off my first ever car. Ended up upside down in a ditch. It wasn't nice. Hope the insurance company get things sorted out for you.

Oh my gosh! Upside down does not sound good at all!! Thankfully my car just spun after the impact, I dread to think what iut must be like to be trapped upside down!!
The insurers have passed my details on to a firm of solicitors to claim compensation or something and they have been phoning me every day. I've sort of ummed and ahhed over that as I've never had to do that before and it doesn't seem right somehow, but then the form arrived with some paperworek so I just filledit inand p[osted it back. Thing is though the only record of inuries is at my local hospital - I haven't seen my GP about it as I didn't think there was any point, the only injuries wre a dislocated sahoulder and lots of back and neck pain, and they're slowly disappearing.
On the plus side I now have a new firend on Facebook lol so yey!!

Do remember that as the modern culture progresses far more towards replacement being cheaper than repair, a car is far, far more readily written off than it used to be. Even a very minor accident often ends up in a write-off these days as the repair quote comes out really high.
Things like checks on braking systems, replacement tyres if they have been skidded, replacement of all seat belts, new airbags, replacement of slightly damaged audio systems or a bent climate control panel, it just all turns out far too difficult and laborious to repair rather than get another one. It's not in the same league as if you were to have written off a vehicle in the 1980s that would have to have been a massive accident rendering the car practically a cube, but nowadays anything more than a fender bender is a write-off.This is a reply to this message.

The nasty thing about dislocated joints is they can be weaker after the event, ligaments can be stretched etc, and there can be further complications. So ask your GP for physio, and record if it gives you any grief.
My ligaments are wrecked in my knee, which wasn't apparent at the time of injury. 5 years late and the leg just spontaneously dislocates... nice.
Shoulders are more robust than knees though so fingers crossed you dont have any problems. This is a reply to this message.

Blimey, seems a bit wasteful!! The surprising thing is that from the A pillars back the car seems OK. From the photos though it does lookas though the front crossmember and suspension/steering components are damaged, so there may be more underlying and invisible damage to it.

Gosh I had no idea about that!! I kinda rely on my arms to get around in my chair...This is a reply to this message.

You can claim from MIRAS after an accident with an uninsured driver or your insurance company pays you and they get rembursed from them.
The woman that cripped me wasnt insured and I was prepered to sue her personally so she didnt work for 6 years so I would get nothing and then her picture was on the front page of our local paper, the DHSS had paid for her a car to start her own buisness because she was long term unemployed.
People like her get away with anything, she dosnt have a conscience.
I would document your injuries, they may come back to haunt you and as a manual wheelchair user you need your arms more than most, Ive lost the ability to propel since January when I broke my hand and arthritis set in so I now use a powerchair that I cant get in and out of the car on my own so all independance is lost, Ive been a wheelie for a long time and a quite independant wheelie until January and now Im reliant on someone everytime I go out.
Hows your partner managing without a car, does she have a car provided by the insurance company?

The saga continues...
Turns out the guy that caused the accident wasn't even who he claimed to be but had given his cousins name and addres to the Police at scene.
His cousin dobbed him in when he found out what had happened and the Police went round and arrested the guy and have charged him with obstructing Police, driving without due care and driving without insurance, tax or MOT.
Kind of a shock to see something going right for a change....

DisDat, have you looked at all the ramp, hoist, turning seat, etc. options that might allow you to get a powerchair into a car on your own? Since you have had a major change of circumstances you should be able to change a Motability car mid-lease and apply for a grant for a drive-from wheelchair vehicle.
Maybe you haven't quite got around to all these time-consuming bits and pieces yet as you get used to your new situation, but longer term you need your independence back as much as you can get it, and you may be able to use a simple boot hoist if you are able to transfer from a manual and lift it into the car still (you put the manual in the boot and transfer to put the leccy chair on the hoist then wheel to the front seat and get in as normal transfer and pull manual in) or maybe you need something more involved, but you shouldn't have your freedom curtailed just because you can't get your own chair in the car, there's so many ways of potentially overcoming that obstacle. This is a reply to this message.

Ive tried using both manual and powerchair and it was just to hard, I need a WAV and while Im looking for one now my best bet is the mobility roadshow in Peterborough next year, there I can try many of the options and decide whats best for me.
Its not so bad ATM because my OHs off work and there no chance of him returning to work in the short-mid term so between him and my uncle Im managing but I still want my independance.
Im also keeping an eye on the nearly new WAV mobility scheme, it would reduce the cost massivly if one came up that was right for me.
