I cuaght the end of a simailar piece on the BBC news last night.
They had a bloke in his 40s - a wheelchair user. He now runs a successful business. However he never went to university as twenty years ago disabled people were simply banned from doing so.
That article suggests some very slow changes are happening, perhaps ever so slightly more quickly becuase the Paralympics are there.
The article suggests that for the games a ban on guide dogs has been lifted in Beijing. So usually guide dogs are banned!
From China Daily:-
"Guide dogs allowed in city buses during Beijing Paralympics
Updated: 2008-09-04 09:00
Blind people can take guide dogs on the buses during the Beijing Paralympics, which runs from September 6-20, the Beijing Public Transport Holdings company said on Wednesday.
Conductors should notify other passengers that guide dogs are working animals and will not hurt them, the statement said. Dogs will be kept in the front of the bus, near conductors. Ownership of large dogs in Beijing is restricted and large dogs are barred from public places."

Two blokes in a Beijing restaurant.
One bloke asks for the tomato ketchup.
The other bloke passes the ketchup over and says 'you spoil your dog'

I didn't know some of the details, such as the restrictions on guide dogs (I liked the 'compromise' in one of the links where the pioneering guide-dog owner could use her guide-dog provided an AB was with them -- it made me wonder if he had to walk in front with a red flag...), but unfortunately I can't say that I was at all shocked. This is a reply to this message.
