The Ouch Assessment: Sarah Gordy

by Ouch Team

11th September 2006

Sarah Gordy has Down's Syndrome, and has already established herself as an actress in the areas of TV and stage performance. She is currently playing the lead role in Seize the Day. This touring play, set below stairs in the early 20th century, is written by Glennys Evans, and performed by Hijinx Theatre, a company who specialise in creating works with the learning disabled audience in mind - more details here. We caught up with Sarah during rehearsals to bestow on her the honour of an Ouch Assessment - much better than a DLA one.

Getting around

Sometimes my mum takes me places and sometimes I get the train or the bus or a taxi because I am very independent. I am disappointed that I can't drive because my eyesight's not too good. I would like to if it got better. I like topless cars with no roof.

Hero

My superhero is George Clooney because he is very good looking and I would love to work with him (giggles).

Villain

I don't like Coronation Street's Richard Hillman. He's a serial killer and I really don't like that character. I don't like that at all.

The question I get asked most often

Most of the journalists ask me how old I am. I just don't admit my age to them though because I can act as someone who is younger and get away with it. I'm in my mid 20s.

Food and Diet

Mainly I love Chinese. I did try some oriental dishes like Indian, and also Mexican. It is very difficult to have a good diet when I am in a play because I eat chocolates and crisps, snacking between meals but I keep up a good diet. Sometimes I cook but my mum, dad and sister do it for me. I like anything they cook for me, especially when it's not spicy foods because I am too sensitive to spice. So I don't like hot stuff.

Favourite gizmo

Well my favourite thing is to get into the internet because I learn a lot from it. I also play mind games like scrabble or games using French and other languages.

Disability role model

Oh that's a good question! Blind actor John Wilson Goddard. He is a lovely bloke, a member of equity and I see him lots. We meet every third Saturday. I haven't worked with him yet but I would really like to.

The last thing I really cringed at

I don't like pain or blood or things like that. They make me cringe. I'm very squeamish.

What will have changed ten years from now?

I don't know really. I'd like the world to be a safer place with no violence and no horrible people around. I wouldn't like to be doing anything different to what I am doing. I'm very happy.

Shopping

I like to buy low tops or mainly dresses. girly clothes. I like to dress up.

Nights out

I do go to lots of parties, and lots of discos as well. I go with my mates, but sometimes with my parents if it is an adult party. I drink, and like everything, especially Bacardi Breezers.

What aren't you getting enough of?

I would like to be doing more television, and more films if I can.

What do you spend most of your time doing?

Most of the time I love doing theatre and stage plays. I just love performing in front of an audience. It's my passion to act! I started to do old plays at my school in Coleborough and I've been doing it since I was a little girl really. I performed in the play walking on water by Sarah Woods, and I did some television work as well followed by commercials. My very first TV role was on peek practice where I was the main theme of the episode. Then I did some commercials, one for Mencap to stop bullying of adults with learning difficulties, a government one about hiring and firing a person with Down's Syndrome and also a German lottery advert set in the 60s. I admire Dame Judi Dench, I like her and I love her work. There are lots of things I would love to play. There are different characters I could play ... like a bitter wife who has a gangster husband.
I also write poetry, I like history and science, and I write some songs as well. My mum doesn't like me singing because I sing very flat. and according to my dad I sound like a screaming cat. When I do karaoke I sing my heart out.

About Sarah Gordy and Seize the Day

An hour and a quarter in length, Seize the Day is well worth going to see, not least due to the remarkable performance of Sarah Gordy. Present almost constantly throughout, this actress delivers her many lines with precision, including a number of lengthy passages and quotes from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Sarah's character listens intently
"I come from East Sussex, Lewes. I'm an actress and I'm doing a play called Seize the Day. I play a kitchen maid who discovers Shakespeare. Her name is Mary McBride but her identity gets lost and she is called Rose in Service. I like her because she is a very emotional girl. She's loveable, affectionate and she gets to fall in love with the groom."
According to her mum Jane, "The thing theatre companies are always amazed at with Sarah is that by the time she comes to them for rehearsal, she knows every line from the play off by heart."

Jane is Sarah's facilitator on this touring production and also has a small part in the play. Sarah says: "She helps me with my lines beforehand. She also helps me dress and to do my hair and makeup. My mum and I have a really close relationship. "
Seize the Day by Glennys Evans will play in various Theatres, schools and town halls throughout England and Wales between now and mid July. For more details and a tour schedule visit Hijinx.org.uk
