13 Questions: Otto Baxter

by Emma Tracey

14th July 2009

21-year-old aspiring actor Otto Baxter lives with his adoptive mum Lucy and 3 siblings in Oxfordshire. All four brothers have Down’s Syndrome, but with 11 acting roles in the past 10 years, an entry in the Raindance Film Festival and many TV appearances to his credit, Otto is the one who steals the limelight.

Otto wants a girlfriend, and more particularly, sex. Lucy has been open in her attempts to help him find both. Together they hit the headlines when Otto's mother suggested that if he wanted to visit a sex worker, she would support him; though she tells me she said it "to shut up an annoying reporter". As part of the Adult Season on BBC3, Otto travelled to Las Vegas to experience the casinos, the strip clubs and, well, whatever else took his fancy. After he'd had a chance to cool down, Otto answered my 13 Questions with some support from Lucy.

Uppermost in my mind today is ...

That some people came around this morning who want to make another documentary about me. I'd like to make the greatest horror film ever. I'd be the hero. Come, come, come with me if you want to live!

People think I'm ...

Funny. I pull faces and tell jokes. Where do you weigh a whale? At a whaleweigh station. Why did the skeleton leave the disco? Because he had no body to dance with.

I want to ban ...

Staring.
Lucy: From when Otto was really tiny, he would get upset when people stared. He would always try to smile and break the ice, but sometimes you just can't.
Otto: It makes me feel terrible.

Not a lot of people know that …

When I was 8, I snogged my friend Tarla from school. She tasted great, like roast chicken.

I struggle with ...

Cooking. I cut my thumb trying to cut a carrot.
Lucy: Otto's idea of cooking is to open tins and eat the contents cold. He also likes white bread with mayonnaise squirted on it.

I excel at ...

Dancing. I like Michael Jackson's thriller. It Impresses the girls.
Lucy: Otto has a talent for dancing but his body wasn't built for it. He has painful knees and can't walk far.

My ideal dinner guest is ...

A hot girl. Maybe Rachel Stevens.

If I didn't live in the UK, I'd live in ...

Hollywood. It has famous celebrities. I'd live in a girl’s flat.

Where do you spend most of your time?

In front of the television or computer, or at the pub with my friend Jamie.

My first job was ...

Lucy: In Furnistore in Red Hill where we lived before. They gave furniture to people who couldn't afford it. Otto would put it away and show people around, helping them choose. He has also been teaching children drama.
Otto: I was in a Mid Summer Night's dream. I was bottom.
Lucy: He has acted in lots of Shakespeare and Canterbury Tales.

Having a documentary made about me was …

Really great! Exciting! Remarkable! We went to casinos and won money. I put it on 35 and the wheel spun around and landed on 35. I wanted the money to spend on strip clubs. I waved my cash, a girl came, I pulled her panties and put money in. Then she did a kinky dance.

My ideal woman would have …

Blonde hair, fantastic boobs and nice cleavage, Lovely skin. I would like us to have a shower together washing each other’s backs.

In the future I would like to …

Be a porn star, make a rock record and be in a musical, maybe Phantom of the Opera.
Otto: Love Lust and Las Vegas, is part of BBC3’s Adult Season. Catch the programme on Tuesday the 21st of July at 9 PM on BBC3, or afterwards on the BBC iPlayer.
