13 Questions: Louis Kissaun

by Ouch Team

5th March 2009

You probably haven't heard of Louis Kissuan yet. By the end of this week that will've changed. The teenage actor arrives on our television screens on Tuesday, playing the character of Danny in Channel 4's BAFTA-winning comedy drama, Shameless.

Danny arrives on the scene in true Chatsworth estate style, stuffed in the boot of another character's car, and chaos ensues. For Shameless, that's quite usual. More uniquely, Danny is profoundly deaf, and so is Louis, making him the first deaf actor to have a continuing role in a major mainstream British drama since... Ooh, we can't remember.

It's a first acting role for Louis, who celebrated his sixteenth birthday while filming and manages to fit filming around his studies at Mary Hare School for the Deaf in Newbury, Berkshire. Ouch grabbed five minutes out of his busy schedule to ask him our probing thirteen questions down a challengingly quiet phone line.

Uppermost in my mind today is...

What's for supper. I'd like it to be chicken tikka masala. That's my favourite.

People think I'm...

What do you think of me? [He consults with nearby friends] They think I'm Emo. When the skinny jeans trend came in I was among the first to wear them, so... I play football, though!

I want to ban...

Drugs. Why not? All drugs are bad for you, in case you're not aware. They ruin lives.

My ideal dinner guest is...

Stanley Kubrick. I'd ask him, "What was going through your mind when you were filming A Clockwork Orange?!"

I couldn't live without...

Curry. 90% of me is curry. The other 10% is probably sandwiches. Also, I couldn't live without music. I like all sorts except hip-hop. Rock. Different flavours. One day I might like the Strokes and the next day hate them, y'know?

Before I got the part in Shameless, I was...

Louis Kissaun in a scene from Shameless
A student doing GCSEs. I didn't want to be an actor, really. I wanted to be a film-maker. My mum's an actress. She knew someone who said there was this part and I should go for it, so I took the opportunity and auditioned.

Working on Shameless is...

A great experience. Quite... spectacular! I was really nervous at first but there was nothing to be nervous about because they're such warm people.

Being a deaf actor is...

I haven't been an actor very long. It's just like being any actor, except you say pardon a lot more!

Advice I would give to other deaf teenagers is...

Um ... it's hard being deaf, sometimes, and it's hard being a teenager, especially to have conversations, like this one! Don't let obstacles stop you from doing what you want.

My favourite food is...

Curry, of course. Chicken tikka masala with pilau rice. It's got to be hotter than a korma.

If I didn't live in the UK, I would live in...

New York, probably. It's quite crazy over there.

When I relax in the evening, I...

Hang out with my friends and jam with guitars and drums. But I'm not in a band.

In the future, I would like to...

Work in the film business, probably. Not sure. Whatever I do it will involve storytelling in some form. Maybe a writer. At the moment I want to be a film director.
