BBC Symphony Chorus - Profile

BBC Choral Society 1949
Founded in 1928, and celebrating its 80th anniversary in the 2008-09 season, the BBC Symphony Chorus is one of the UK’s finest large choruses. Its early concerts included UK and world premieres of works by Bartók, Holst, Stravinsky and Mahler and this commitment to new music is undiminished today with commissions in recent years from Judith Bingham, James MacMillan, Michael Nyman, Sir John Tavener, Richard Rodney Bennett and Judith Weir.

As resident chorus for the BBC Proms, the Symphony Chorus regularly gives five or six concerts each season, including the Last night, and often a Prom of its own under Stephen Jackson, Chorus Director since 1989. The Chorus has gained a unique profile among Britain’s amateur choirs for its a cappella repertory, which includes scores by Strauss, Schoenberg, Poulenc and Britten.

The BBC Symphony Chorus appears regularly with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican and elsewhere, with performances in the 2008-09 season including Beethoven’s Missa solemnis, Poulenc’s Stabat Mater and Orff’s Carmina Burana, and a cappella concert in LSO St Luke’s featuring music by Poulenc, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Bernat Vivancos conducted by Stephen Jackson. The Chorus also tours overseas, with visits in 2007 to the Canary Islands, Brussels and Istanbul.
