BBC Symphony Chorus - FAQs

FAQs
How do I join the choir?
To arrange an audition you phone write, email or fax us.
Details here.

When do you audition?
We are always interested in hearing new singers and hold regular auditions throughout the year, on dedicated auditions evenings every month or two, and also sometimes after rehearsals.

What does the audition involve?
Auditions last about 15 minutes. You are asked to prepare a solo piece such as a song or an oratorio aria to demonstrate how you sing. You will also be given some sight reading and perhaps some scales to determine your vocal range. We do look for a reasonable standard of sight-reading because of the range of repertoire that we perform. We provide an accompanist.

Do I need a trained voice?
It's not essential to have had singing lessons, although they are useful and you are encouraged to take them.

When and where do you perform?
Our main seasons are at the Barbican - where we perform in about 6 concerts between October and May with the BBC Symphony Orchestra - and the BBC Proms from July to September where we take part in 5 or 6 concerts including the First and Last Nights. We also give concerts on our own and with other orchestras, at other UK venues and abroad.

What repertoire do you sing?
We perform a lot of 20th century repertoire, pieces written for us by living composers and a cappella works as well as the more standard large choral works.

When & where do you rehearse?
We rehearse at the BBC's Maida Vale studios near Paddington
(Warwick Avenue, Bakerloo line). Rehearsals are usually twice a week with Stephen Jackson, regularly on Friday evenings, the other evening alternating between Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They run from 6.40-9.10pm. Immediately before a concert there are additional rehearsals with the conductor of the concert. There is a canteen at Maida Vale which serves food before the rehearsal.

What does it cost to belong?
There is no membership fee, and music and folders are provided free of charge. Travel, accommodation and subsistence are provided for tours.
