BEETHOVEN Overture ‘Namensfeier’
STRAVINSKY Symphony in C

Ryan Wigglesworth conductor
Claire Booth soprano

Although only just 30, Ryan Wigglesworth has already forged an international reputation as composer and conductor. He scored a critical hit in 2008 by deputising at short notice for James Levine at Tanglewood Festival in a programme to celebrate Elliott Carter’s 100th year, and received plaudits again last February when he made his BBC Symphony Orchestra debut. Tonight’s programme, typical of Wigglesworth’s insightful musical imagination, sets the world premiere of his Augenlieder in company with Stravinsky orchestral masterpieces.

The music of guitarist/composer Bill Frisell evokes an intensely personal vision of America. Echoes of rural blues, bluegrass, rock 'n' roll and jazz collide within a completely original musical world. He revisits an old alliance with a kindred spirit, the gifted composer/arranger Mike Gibbs - an iconic figure in British and international jazz - in a new collaboration that places Frisell's unmistakable guitar improvisations within a sweeping orchestral landscape. Music by Copland and Ives set the scene for this BBC commission.

Breaking with tradition is part of BBC Symphony Orchestra life, memorably stated in tonight’s innovative mix of music old and new. Josquin, born around 1450, was among the most influential composers of his day. His elegy Nymphes des Bois is one of the greatest works of musical mourning, an ideal companion to Mozart’s sublime Requiem. Boulez wrote his monumental Rituel, first performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1975, in memory of his friend and colleague Bruno Maderna.
