GUBAIDULINA String Quartet No. 1

Royal String Quartet

Groundbreaking Haydn and Gubaidulina's earliest string quartets touch on the breathtaking variety of musical invention. The String Quartet No. 1, completed in 1971, radically departs from the ensemble of equals imagined by Haydn almost two centuries earlier. Isolation lies at the work's heart, finally expressed when each player moves to a corner of the stage to become an independent voice. The divine silences of the String Quartet No 2 (1987) present a beguiling antidote to what the composer calls 'the staccato of life'.

The violin concerto Offertorium marked a critical milestone in Gubaidulina's work. Based on the 'Royal Theme' from Johann Sebastian Bach's A Musical Offering, the 1980s score treats its historic source material as a "sacrificial offering", shortening the theme every time it appears. Pro et Contra , a monumental composition for orchestra, creates a mystical combination of refined instrumental sounds and tonal contrasts. Gubaidulina's long-time advocate and friend, Valery Gergiev, guides the London Symphony Orchestra through this revelatory programme.
