Born in 1910, Roman Maciejewski developed his abundant musical talents at the Warsaw Music Institute before being expelled for his part in a student strike. He escaped Poland’s devastation during World War Two as an exile in Sweden, where he worked regularly with Ingmar Bergman. Maciejewski reflected on the fortitude and suffering of his homeland in the mighty Missa Pro Defunctis (1946-59). Traces of Mozart, Verdi, Ravel and Stravinsky never swamp the individuality and nobility of Maciejewski’s deeply moving score which is performed in the ideal setting of Westminster Cathedral.

JANACEK Katya Kabanova Suite (world premiere of suite)
KORNGOLD Violin Concerto in D major
MARTINU Symphony No. 4
Jiří Bĕlohlávek conductor
Andrew Haveron violin
Central Europe’s essential spirit courses through the veins of this evening’s programme, from inimitable orchestral music drawn from Janacek’s opera Katya Kabanova to the irresistible lyricism of Martinů’s Fourth Symphony (1945). The Suite from Katya, arranged by Czech composer Jaroslav Smolka, here receives its world premiere performance. Old Vienna and the music of 1930s Hollywood combine in tuneful pomp in Korngold’s Violin Concerto. Tonight’s soloist is one of the BBC SO's two Leaders, Andrew Haveron.

SZYMANOWSKI Concert Overture
DVORAK Violin Concerto in A minor
PROKOFIEV Symphony No. 3 in C minor
Alexander Vedernikov conductor
Frank Peter Zimmermann violin
Karol Szymanowski’s progressive ideas frequently set him at odds with the establishment. When he was dismissed from the Warsaw Music Institute in 1932, Roman Maciejewski (see 4 February) led a student uprising to have him reinstated. The Concert Overture dates from the early 1900s, when Szymanowski was closely associated with the groundbreaking Young Poland circle of writers. Distinguished German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann takes the solo spotlight in Dvořák’s evergreen Violin Concerto, while the programme’s second half holds the compelling Third Symphony of Prokofiev.
