Bohuslav Martinů invested rich personal experience in his First Symphony, a work conceived in exile from Nazi-dominated Europe. Fifty years after the composer’s death, his fellow Czech and leading interpreter Jiří Bĕlohlávek opens the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s season with the first concert in a series devoted to the composer’s six symphonies. The Orchestra’s Chief Conductor is joined by the outstanding bass-baritone Gerald Finley in two essential works by Mahler and Musorgsky.

Symphony No. 2
R. STRAUSS Four Last Songs
MAHLER Adagio from Symphony No.10
R. STRAUSS Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche

Jiří Bĕlohlávek conductor
Anne Schwanewilms soprano

In the shocking aftermath of the Second World War, the octogenarian Richard Strauss increasingly sought refuge in nostalgic memories of times past. His richly romantic Four Last Songs, completed less than a year before his death, stands as the composer’s elegiac farewell to the world. They are sung tonight by Anne Schwanewilms, acclaimed among the finest of Strauss interpreters. Martinů’s Second Symphony dates from 1943, its effervescent music written to honour the defiant courage of Czechs living under Nazi oppression.
