The concert opened with a dramatic new brass and percussion piece, Fanfare for Cloud Gate. Directed by Tim Steiner, this piece was created and performed by 15 young brass players from Hammersmith & Fulham, supported by members of Fulham Symphony Orchestra, students from Trinity College of Music and the professional brass and percussion players of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
The BBC SO then performed the world premiere of a new orchestral work by Param Vir, a leading international composer who lives in the borough, calledCradled between earth and sky (A reflection of Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate). It was inspired by Kapoor’s acclaimed 110-tonne elliptical Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago and was, in turn, the starting point for the new fanfare. The concert concluded with Beethoven's Fourth Symphony.
Fanfare for Cloud Gate has been nominated for a 2007 Royal Philharmonic Society Award.
