Past BBC SO Family Orchestra Events
As the flagship ensemble of BBC SO Learning, the BBC SO Family Orchestra & Chorus makes regular appearances during the BBC SO season.
The most recent Family Orchestra and Chorus outing was a special weekend of workshops at BBC Maida Vale studios in October 2009, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the BBC Symphony Orchestra at in the studios. Check back soon for details of where you can listen to recordings from the weekend!
Earlier this year the Family Orchestra ventured out for a drop-in workshop at Westfield shopping centre as part of BBC Proms 'Out+About'. Before that, January saw a spectacular performance in the freestage area of the Barbican, as part of the Total Immersion: Stockhausen celebrations. 90 family members devised and performed 'Ironi', a piece based on the musical ideas of Stockhausen's piece 'Inori', which the BBC SO was performed that evening in the Barbican main hall.
This project was hot on the heels of the Family Orchestra's involvement in the BBC SO's Diverse Orchestra Week: Turkey. This project saw an exciting collaboration with the London Saz School, who added a strong authentic Turkish feel to the music. The piece was inspried byTurkish scales and melodies, and members of the Family Orchestra also learnt some Turkish dance moves and rhythms!
Earlier projects have seen a performance at the British Museum in June 2008 as part of BBC Proms Out + About. 2007 saw the BBC SO Family Orchestra and Chorus perform a folk-inspired piece as part of the BBC SO's Judith Weir weekend at the Barbican and a performance by the ensemble as part of the BBC SO's South America Week.
The BBC Proms Family Orchestra have made two appearances with the BBC SO. Their debut performance featured as part of the BBC SO's Proms Out + About concerts at Reading Hexagon in June 2006, formed of nearly fifty local family members. The performance included a guest appearance from presenter Dave Benson Phillips. The Brighton Proms Family Orchestra performed in Brighton in June 2007, as part of the BBC SO's Prom Out + About venture in Brighton. Over forty family members took part in the world premiere performance of Brighton Rock at Brighton Dome.
We had a BBC SO Family Orchestra Day on Sunday 4 March 2007 in BBC Maida Vale Studios. We welcomed over 80 family members, aged 5 upwards, and were joined by members of the BBC SO and their families. In just one day, the Family Orchestra created and performed a brand new piece - involving Iranian dafs and ouds, 20 violins, 11 cellos, 15 percussionists, celeste, piano, woodwind, brass and guitars...
The launch of the BBC SO's 2006-7 season at the Barbican on Friday 29 September 2006 also saw the first ever public performance of the BBC SO Family Orchestra in the Barbican foyer. Click here to find out how this performance went!
