The period of Malcom Sargent's chief conductorship of the BBCSO, from 1950, was one of the less adventurous in terms of premieres; but he undertook this UK premiere, as well as British premieres of pieces by Walton, Rubbra and others.

Frank Martin is an underrated composer; Sargent did the large-scale oratorio Golgotha in 1954, but this little concerto, which George Malcolm performed, has lasted better.

A Koussevitzky commission for Boston, this took a long time to reach the UK, and was performed by Czech music expert Vilem Tausky.
