BBC Four with BBC Radio 3 are to celebrate and reappraise the giant of the orchestral repertoire, the symphony, through a series of programmes to be broadcast this autumn. In the most in-depth appraisal of this artistic form to be broadcast on television, Simon Russell Beale explores how the symphony evolved over the last three centuries as one of the most complex and brilliant musical forms of expression.

To launch the BBC's celebration of the symphony, the BBC Symphony Orchestra with a specially assembled 'Symphony' Chorus treated commuters to a live performance at St Pancras International Station of the last movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony - watch the video highlights now or see the photos.
Come and play great symphonic repertoire with the BBC Symphony Orchestra
Saturday 12 November, BBC Maida Vale Studios
As part of the BBC's celebration of the symphony, we invited keen musicians to join us on the 12th November to come and play a classic symphony, either Dvorak's Ninth Symphony or Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony, alongside members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra - see the photo.
