Education and Community: Working With Us

BBC Philharmonic - Asda percussionists
Pop-Up Projects

As part of our ongoing work in the community we have been making music in some very unusual places recently. The BBC Philharmonic's Education Department has been working in partnership with North City Arts on the 'Pop-up Project'.

The Pop-up Project is an innovative three-year collaboration in which cultural events 'pop-up' in unlikely places as part of a process of social regeneration. Events have included Britain's first Supermarket Symphony where 20 members of the Orchestra performed a new work composed and devised by local North Manchester children and residents with the help of composer Barry Russell in the Asda store in Harpurhey.

The BBC Philharmonic's community partnership with North City Arts continues with more Pop-Up events planned.. Participants in future projects will work with contemporary composers, animateurs, writers, designers and artists to produce original music, art, poetry and prose through the innovative use of new technology for inclusion in a celebration of their work with the full forces of the BBC Philharmonic. Watch out for more events popping-up in offices, street markets and museums soon!

Pub Operas
The Orchestra has also performed three short Pub Operas in the Bluebell Inn in Moston, North Manchester, plus a morning of jazz in North Manchester General Hospital.
