Shadowing the Conductor - James Murray Interview

Gianandrea Noseda by Colin Bell
James Murray, a student currently at the Royal Academy , joined the BBC Philharmonic for a week-long work placement in May 2006.

He shadowed the BBC Philharmonic as they prepared for one of the Tchaikovsky Symphonies performances at the Bridgewater Hall. He chatted to us about his experiences of the week.

Why did you want to come and do work experience at the BBC Philharmonic?

Whilst I was at school I was fortunate enough to see Gianandrea Noseda's first performance at the Bridgewater Hall, he was conducting Shostakovich's 8 th Symphony. This was an incredibly exciting performance and I have been keen to work alongside the BBC Philharmonic since that time.

My violin teacher at Lancaster Royal Grammar made me aware of the possibilities of doing work placements so I contacted the BBC Philharmonic directly to enquire about it.

What did you find particularly useful about the placement?

Watching the players rehearsing in the lead up to the performance was absolutely fascinating as you get to see every aspect of the musical experience. I really felt you had time to examine the music in a unique and very useful way, deconstructing the layers of these fantastic pieces gave me a deep understanding of the music.

Also, watching the players over the three days meant I saw the build up and transition in the orchestra's performance. It was also particularly interesting to see how Gianandrea communicates his ideas with the orchestra.

You were keen to spend time with Gianandrea Noseda the Philharmonic's Principal Conductor. Did you find this time helpful?

Gianandrea was great. He took time with me to chat about his conducting experiences and also went through the scores with me, picking up on some conducting points that he thought were pertinent. He also recommended a masterclass in Italy that I may find useful and I do hope to be able to attend in the future.

It was very inspiring talking to Gianandrea and I have decided to form an orchestra next year to play some Tchaikovsky pieces as I now feel like a unique insight into the symphonies.

Would you recommend the experience to others?

Absolutely. I found the experience a fantastic springboard and a real boost to my confidence as I felt I had learnt so much from the experience. Just sitting in the orchestra gives you a unique insight into the workings of a world class orchestra and the chance to speak to Gianandrea was very special.
