Schubert Study Day

On Monday 10 October, the BBC Philharmonic and Radio 3's Discovering Music programme come together to present an afternoon of analysis concentrating on Schubert's Songs and Symphony No.8 Unfinished

Charles Hazlewood and David Owen Norris will conduct workshop-style recording sessions with the BBC Philharmonic and guest soloists for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The day will start at the Manchester University Music Department where students have the chance to quiz representatives from AQA, Edexcel and OCR on exam techniques for approaching the extracts papers, covering Schubert's songs and the Unfinished Symphony.

At 11.45 students will then attend the recording of Discovering Music - Schubert Songs featuring Die Forelle,Du bist die Ruh, Erlkönig and Der Doppelganger. This session, hosted by David Owen Norris will explore some of Schubert's predecessors and musical influences to construct a fascinating picture of his compositional world. The tenor soloist is BBC New Generation Artist Andrew Kennedy who will be accompanied by Christopher Glynn.

Before the lunch break there will be a short preliminary session on Schubert's Symphony No.8 Unfinished presented by Schubert specialist Dr Crawford Howie.

The focus will then be transferred to Studio 7 concert hall, the home of the BBC Philharmonic, for the recording of Discovering Music - Schubert's Unfinished. Presented by Charles Hazlewood, this session will give students a thorough insight into this incredible work.

A must for all AS and A2 students. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
