Welcome to the woodwind
This section of the orchestra got its name from the fact that many of its instruments were originally made from wood. Now they can be made from plastic, silver, gold - even platinum!
Listen to the Woodwind
Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony
Flute
Small is beautiful! Silver to look at and silver to the ear.
Oboe
Descended from one of the world's oldest instruments, but very much alive.
Clarinets and Saxophones
You are just as likely to hear these playing jazz or pop.
Bassoon
The gentle giant of the woodwind family, specialising in bass and melody alike.
