trumpet title image

The trumpet is the highest brass instrument. It is made from a brass tube that is bent about and opens into a shape called a "bell".

The trumpet makes a very loud, strong sound, which can be heard above the rest of the orchestra.

Dave McCallum plays the trumpet with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Read about him below.

Dave McCallum, Trumpet

How old were you when you first started playing?
I was seven.
Why did you choose this instrument?
There was a brass teacher at my primary school.
Do you play any other instruments?
The piano and organ.
What do you like most about playing in an orchestra?
An orchestra is like a football team with 60 players. I can't think of any other job where that many people have to perform together. As you can imagine, it can be a lot of fun - sometimes!
Do you play any other kind of music?
Not now. I used to work in function bands, and play the music for shows. The BBC Concert Orchestra has lots of variety!
What is your favourite music?
Good music!
Do you have any hobbies?
Spending time with my children, DIY and cycling.
What would you have been if you weren't a musician?
Rich and bored!
