Sir John Stainer's oratorio was first performed in Marylebone Parish Church in 1887 and has since become one of the most popular devotional works in the English language and recognised as a classic of the Victorian choral repertoire – a work whose simple piety and honest integrity have endeared it to generations.
Tonight's concert pairs it with three other fine examples of Victorian choral writing in a broadcast which will be heard across Europe and beyond as part of the European Broadcasting Union's day of live broadcasts for Palm Sunday
