Mahler's Fourth Symphony
with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC National Chorus of Wales
Friday 20 April 2012, 7.30pm
St David's Hall, The Hayes, Cardiff CF10 1AH
part of the St David's Hall 2011-12 series
JOSEPH HAYDN Symphony No. 104, 'London'
MAHLER Symphony No 4
Unfortunately, BBC National Orchestra of Wales will no longer be performing Simon Holt's The Yellow Wallpaper at St. David's Hall the Friday. The soloist, Lisa Milne, is unable to perform a work of this duration due to illness. We hope that Lisa Milne may still be well enough to sing in the finale of Mahler's Fourth Symphony as programmed. The concert will now open with Haydn's Symphony No 104, London.
Mahler's Fourth Symphony is one of his most relaxed works - classical, song-like and culminates in a representation of a child's view of heaven. An early commentator remarked, "Mahler's
Symphony is a work for children and those who will become children.
Broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
