Come and Play … Britten
Saturday 2 - Sunday 3 November
Celebrate Benjamin Britten's Centenary with an opportunity to play and learn side-by-side with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra
As part of celebrations for Benjamin Britten's centenary we are forming an orchestra of amateur and professional musicians sitting side-by-side to play his pieces Suite on English Folk Tunes (A Time There Was) and Sinfonia da Requiem.
If you are an experienced amateur musician looking for a new challenge this is your opportunity to further improve your skills and musicianship, and work with a new group of players including professional musicians over an intensive weekend at City Halls.
Youll be guided and coached by the talented young conductor Andrew Gourlay and the members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in sectionals and orchestral rehearsals, and youll get a chance to perform side-by-side with the BBC SSO on stage at Glasgows City Halls for an audience of friends and family.
We are recruiting for the following orchestral instruments:
Flute / Oboe / Clarinet / Alto Saxophone / Bassoon:
Horn / Trumpet / Trombone:
Orchestral Piano / Orchestral Harp / Percussion:
Violin / Viola / Cello / Double Bass
Please apply by email (including your contact details) to SSOOutreach@bbc.co.uk and tell us what instrument you play, and a brief outline of your previous experience. We will offer places on the basis of first-come-first-served, but we may also take into account previous experience.
We recommend this event for anyone of Grade 7 and above, or those with plenty of experience of playing in amateur orchestras.
This event is not suitable for beginners.
The repertoire for the weekend will be Britten's Suite on English Folk Tunes (A Time There Was) and Sinfonia da Requiem. You will be sent the music 3 weeks before the project, and will be expected to be familiar with the music before the start of rehearsals.
