Getting Closer - 2011-2012 concert season

Get closer to the music this season, with a series of talks, open rehearsals and activities you can get involved with, designed to expand your knowledge of some of the works performed in concert by BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
This series of free events in venues across Wales give you the chance to meet some of the Orchestra, and to find out more about how some of your favourite pieces were composed.

Performer Plus
Join members of the Orchestra to explore the work of Bruckner, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Strauss. These informal sessions in the Grace Williams Studio, BBC Hoddinott Hall, include an introduction to the composer and his work, and a performance of some related works by members of the Orchestra. Tickets are free, but limited - please book by calling 0800 052 1812.
- Bruckner, presented by Donal Bannister, Principal Trombone - Monday 21 November, 7pm (relating to Mozart and Bruckner on Friday 25 November)
- Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, presented by Nick Whiting, Associate Leader - Sunday 15 January, 7pm (relating to Russian Romantics on Friday 20 January). Includes a performance of Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio Op. 50 in A minor.
- R. Strauss, presented by Donal Bannister, Principal Trombone - Tuesday 12 June, 11am (relating to Alpine Symphony on Friday 15 June)
Open Rehearsals
Want to see how the Orchestra prepare for a concert? Concert ticket holders are invited to come along to selected rehearsals and meet members of the Orchestra. Tickets are free, but limited - please book by calling 0800 052 1812.
- Wednesday 8 February, 7.30pm at St David's Hall, Cardiff (Sibelius and Elgar, conducted by Jac van Steen, with the BBC National Chorus of Wales)
- Thursday 22 March, 4pm at Aberystwyth Arts Centre (Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Haydn, conducted by Jac van Steen)
- Saturday 26 May, 4pm at Brangwyn Hall, Swansea (Adams, Shostakovich and Debussy, conducted by François-Xavier Roth)
Pre-concert talks
Principal Trombone Donal Bannister will be giving a free informal talk at 6.30pm before our St David's Hall concert on Friday 9 December (Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ). Talks are free to concert ticket holders - please book in advance by calling 0800 052 1812.
