Composers announced for Welsh Composers Showcase 2011

BBC National Orchestra of Wales would like to thank all composers who submitted scores for this season's Welsh Composers Showcase, 17-18 February 2011. The standard of submissions increases year on year and we have been delighted with the response.

SELECTED COMPOSERS AND SCORES
LUKE STARKEY A Box of Frogs
Luke was born in Aylesbury and has lived in Wales since he was 7 years old. He studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and organises events promoting new music by Cardiff based composers.
IESTYN HARDING From Those Flames
Iestyn is from Rhymney and studied with Geoff Poole at the University of Bristol. Iestyn is currently a member of staff of Caerphilly Music Service.
MARK DAVID BODEN Six Degrees
Mark is from Staffordshire. He studied at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is currently living in Cardiff and teaching at the Junior Department of RWCMD.
ANDREW POWELL Points upon a canvas
Andrew was born in Surrey and lives in Fishguard. He studied composition with Cornelius Cardew and later at Kings College, Cambridge with Roger Smalley. He is currently working on a new composition for contrabassoon and live electronics.
CHRISTOPHER PAINTER ...the brightness of snow
Christopher is from Port Talbot. He studied composition at University College Cardiff with Alun Hoddinott. Christopher is currently Music Librarian of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
STEVEN BERRYMAN Cypher
Steven is from Mansfield. He studied at Cardiff University and Royal Holloway and is currently Assistant Director of Music at North London Collegiate School, the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music and is a post-graduate composition student at Cardiff University.
ED SCOLDING Copperweight
Ed is from Cardiff. He studied at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is currently a post graduate student at the Royal Academy of Music as well as currently leading a secondary school composition project in Bath.

Composers eligible to submit a score were post-tertiary education composers born in Wales, post-tertiary education composers currently living in Wales, composers studying composition at postgraduate level in Wales and composers born in Wales studying composition at postgraduate level outside Wales.
This unique event will see the selected scores featured in a two day Welsh Composers Showcase at BBC Hoddinott Hall at Wales Millennium Centre. Composers will have their piece performed by BBC National Orchestra of Wales during a workshop session and then selected highlights of the two days will be performed in concert on Friday 18 February, 7pm.
FREE tickets are available for the workshops and final concert.
