Mum's the Word - Sam
We speak to Sam's proud mum
It's a busy week over on the Isle of Sam as they prepare to watch her in the final this Saturday. We grabbed a quick chat with her mum, Ann, to see how she's feeling.
How do you think Sam has done so far?
I am so proud of Samantha. I cannot believe how far she's progressed, and how well she's done. Every week she goes out there and gives a different performance, and I actually can't find the words to tell you how proud I am. I'm blown away.
What I really admire about Samantha is how she handles everything. Whatever is put in front of her, she listens and she takes on board what they're telling her to do and she puts it right. She's always done that. She just handles herself so well, which really comes across with her interviews. She always knows what to say whatever she's asked, and that I really admire. I couldn't do that!
Did you think that Sam would get this far?
I decided at the start that I would take each week at a time, I don't think there's any point in looking too far ahead. I know that's how Samantha works as well, as that's how we work as a family.
Have you been surprised by the level of public support?
We get cards, letters, texts, and people stop me in the street and keep saying 'please tell me, is she only 17 because I can't believe how mature she is!' The support is just amazing.
What's been your favourite performance from her so far?
I think mine is 'Defying Gravity.' It just showed her inner strength and she was just like a true performer. For me, she just looked like a professional who's been on stage for years. I could feel what she was telling me with the song, she told the story, and she looked so happy. You could see that it's her favourite song because she does it so well.
Do any performances from any of the other Nancys stand out for you?
Yes, there are lots actually. I think Rachel's performance last Saturday was fantastic, and the excitement in the audience was amazing. And I also liked Niamh and Sarah it really has been a great show.
How did Samantha react to the 'Isle of Sam' renaming of the island?
She just could not believe it! She thought it was amazing. When she rang me, she said 'is that for real?' and I said 'yes, it is for real!' I think she was really, really honoured, and I had to tell her that I didn't think she actually realised just how much the Isle of Man is behind her, because obviously she's been away for quite some time now.
Do you have any good luck rituals?
No, I don't actually. But, because I know Samantha is so focussed, when we speak or text each other, we don't talk about her performance. We talk about anything but that, because I know she has a job to do, and she knows what she has to deliver.
