Mum's the Word - Jessie

Jessie is in the final, so how does her mum feel?

Jessie is in the final, so how does her mum feel?

We caught up with Jessie's mum, Marina, to see how she's feeling now that we're only days away from the live final.

How do you think Jessie's done do far?

I'm possibly the proudest mum in Ireland, or the whole world. Reflecting on her whole journey through this programme, it's been remarkable. She's so young, this was her first big audition ever, and she's come through all of the ups and the downs, and as a mum I'm so proud of how she's handled both of those, and now here she is in the final and it's just incredible!

Jessie is the eldest of five children, so she has had a very grounded upbringing, coming from a very busy home. And I would like to think that our approach to this whole experience has helped her to stay so grounded.

Did you think that she'd get this far after getting through the first audition?

No, I didn't. I was with her on that very first day and I remember being just so bowled over when she came running out to she'd got through. We really had no idea where this journey was going to take her, and what an incredible experience and amazing learning opportunity it would be for her.

Being a musician myself, I know what it takes for every step of progress in this business, and I have fully appreciated and acknowledged every step that Jessie has taken. I've seen huge development and improvement over the ten weeks of the show, and I've said to her all along – there is nothing that you can't learn.

Have you been surprised by the level of public support for Jessie?

I've been very surprised. It's a huge story here in Ireland which I can understand, but I have been amazed by the level of support in the UK. The ROI are unable to vote, so the recognition of her talent in the UK has been really overwhelming. I mean there she is in the final, and she's never been in a sing-off. I think they love her personality which is endearing, and that combined with her talent is wonderful.

What has been your favourite performance of hers?

I think she's done a number of very good performances, but lots of people would say her 'The Man That Got Away' was the best. It was an extraordinary performance, which was acknowledged. But for me, it would be 'One Night Only' because I think she really connected with the dancers on that one, and I think the tenderness and softness of 'Killing Me Softly' was absolutely beautiful. They would probably be my top three, and they're all very different performances.

Do you have a favourite performance from any of the other Nancys?

I thought Jodie did a lovely performance of 'Send in the Clowns.' It really sticks in my mind, the emotion, the honesty of it. I also have huge admiration and respect for Rachel, which I told her on Saturday night. I think she's a wonderful role model for someone like Jessie.

Do you have any good luck rituals you've been using every week?

Yes I do. Three of Jessie's grandparents are deceased, and before she performs each week I go into a quiet room and have a little conversation with all three of them, and I think they're with her all the way.
