It's
a building that has featured in tales of the outlaw / hero and in films
starring the likes of Errol Flynn and Kevin Costner. Not that the movie
version castles ever look like the real thing.

| The tell-tales that show how much
Nottingham castle has moved |
There's plenty to read about Nottingham castle and if
you want you can take a look around, but how about getting up close and
personal and looking at the less obvious.
You can see some bricks that look out of place. They
are tell-tales, put in to check the movement of the castle back in 1939.
Thankfully they haven't moved very much which shows the building has solid
foundations.
Until the 1970's a plant called Nottingham Catch Fly
used to grow here.
 |
| Vegetation that has established itself
in the rock around the castle |
When the castle burnt down during the Civil War (17th
century) limestone was released creating the ideal conditions for the
plant to thrive.
It was a while flower like a campion. It grew profusely
until the gardeners go so fed up they pulled it all out.
But you can still see other vegetation like wild wallflowers,
typical of old buildings. They thrive because of the mineral content released
by the breakdown of rocks.
