Bethany Ince (name changed) is a 23 year old post grad student at the University of Nottingham who had liposuction done when she was 18.

------

What was the main reason you opted for liposuction?
I had tried to lose weight, but couldn't seem to shift any from my hips no matter what I tried. My waist size went down and my chest size went down but no matter what exercises I did I couldn't lose anything off my hips.

You were quite young when you got it done - was it an impulse decision?
Yeah definitely, I'd come into some inheritance money and was feeling pretty bad in general. I'd seen a lot of adverts in the back of magazines so I just rung a couple of the numbers and made some appointments for free consultations.

So how long between first thinking about it and actually getting to the operating table?
No more than a month.

That is quick, please tell me you didn't just go for the first one you went to…
No, I went to a few surgeries in Harley Street in London and then ended up opting for a clinic based in Finchley by the end of the week.

What were the main factors in helping you decide where to get it done?
Well…

(I sensed something awkward in the air)
… I trusted the surgeon because he had operated on someone close to me and they were very happy with the results.

How close and was it the same operation?
No, my mum had breast enlargements done by him.

(I didn't know where to look) Oh… but surely that's no guarantee for the success of yours, I mean, your getting stuff taken out and she was having stuff put in?
I like a man that can give and take… No, seriously the surgery was highly rated, I'd met the surgeon before and he seemed very confident in what he could achieve and due to my mums success I had every reason to trust him.

Once you'd decided on who, what happened next?
In the consultation the doctor had asked me to stand in my underwear so he could take some Polaroid pictures of my problem areas. He then highlighted on the photos what bits he could change and by how much. He had a collection of before and after shots of all his patients and there was a considerable difference.

And on the day of operation?
Got to the surgery early and of course I was nil by mouth, I had to put on paper pants and a robe. The surgeon came in and drew three circles with a marker on where he was going to operate. A couple of hours later I went in to the operating theatre and was put asleep. When I woke I found myself in a really nice room and was very drowsy. The first thing I did was put my hand down to my hips and was immediately disappointed because my hips actually felt bigger than before, but that was because they had put a load of bandages on them post op.

How long were you in hospital for?
Only over night. Throughout the evening I was given strong pain killers so I wasn't in any pain and then the surgeon came in, reassured me that it had been a success and told me how much fat he had removed.

He showed it to you?!?
No, he wouldn't let me see it. I think he said he took out two pints though.

(The thought of bags of runny fat made me want to heave, I'd never thought of fat as a liquid before). Were you happy with the results?
At first I wasn't, I had to wear these really tight unattractive cycling short type things to hold my sides firm, I wasn't allowed to have a bath or shower in them as I couldn't remove them. But when I did and could see the difference I was very pleased.

But surely you had to go to the toilet?
They were crotchless…

I thought you said they were unattractive…
Very funny… (and then I swear she mumbled the word 'dick')… after a week or so when I got to remove them I has happy, the lumps that I hated were gone and I had no scars on my side.

How did they manage that they must have cut your sides to get the fat out?
No, they make a tiny incision about a cm wide but to this day I have no idea where they are. I can't find them.

Do you know how they actually get the fat out?
They suck it out (my raised eyebrow must have indicated I thought that was a little weird so she continued… much to my relief) with a tube on a motor obviously.

------

Bethany was happy with her operation.

It's been brought to my attention that once you've had liposuction fat does not go back to the treated area but re-disperses itself onto other areas.

Bethany says when she has the money she would have it done again, but at £2500 a suck it's not a cheap option.
