Sexual liberation is nothing new. However, more
and more people are feeling free to be open about their individual
sexual identity.
Lesbian experimentation has even been in the news as a growing trend
with teenage Americans.
Samantha Hull (identity changed) is an American exchange student
who has studied at Nottingham Trent University.
Samantha is heterosexual but has had a lesbian experience.
Loay El Hady caught up with her to find out whether it was a one
off, a career move, or was she, as many try to pretend, just that
drunk.
------
Bored? You can now change your job, your clothes
or even your sexual orientation.
One in ten people is now presumed to be homosexual, so theoretically
the odds must be even higher for bi-sexuals.
The whole area of bisexuality seems rather a grey one; does one
experience make you bi? Or is there a basic requirement of activities
or perhaps even an initiation to qualify?
First things first, are you a lesbian?
No, I've just been with girls.
When you say "been with", what do you mean?
I've had intimate relationships with girls.
Okay, your gonna have to help me out a little cos it's not as
biologically plain sailing, like if you were a guy, you'd say intimate
and I'd ask 'so have you shagged them' but that's physically impossible
for girls so
Not necessarily
So how did it start?
Really I just decided I wanted to give it a go, my sexuality
is very important to me and I wanted to explore it as much as I
could.
How did you go about finding your first lesbian partner?
My friends and I talk about sex a lot. We're really physical
with each other and stuff, and we've all seen each other naked so
it just seemed natural I'd ask one of them.
Why have you all seen each other naked?
Back home we live together and sometimes we go round the house naked.
(My common sense kicked in) Are you having me on?
No, why?
(I thought better of saying that was weird)
So how did you instigate your first ummm
errr
"Session"?
It was with a close friend of mine, we talked about it before
for a while, she'd done it before so figured she'd wanna do it with
me too, I broached the subject, but she refused, but then when I
went to bed that night she came into my room.
And it was a big thing to you?
My sexuality?
No, I mean being with a girl?
Oh yeah - really big - getting sexual with a girl is so different
from being with a guy.
Why would it be any different?
Well think Einstein, it's not just about getting to the finish
line is it.
Not all guys are like that.
No, but most guys seem to link intimacy and relationships, whereas
with a girl that's not a problem. You can just be really intimate
plus we have a head start on what other girls might like. Most guys
really don't know how sensitive things are or sometimes even where
they are!
So really is it just cos you think girls do stuff better?
The doing part isn't so much the issue, obviously guys and girls
do different things well to different degrees, like the best sex
I've ever had was with a guy and nothing I've done with a girl even
compares to it, but if you don't try you'll never know.
Have you done it since?
Yeah.
With just that friend?
No, I've been with four girls doing stuff more than just kissing.
But you wouldn't say you were a lesbian?
No, cos I'm not attracted to girls. It's not all linked you know
sex is something, intimacy is something, and attraction is something
else entirely. Most people just don't differentiate.
Was that the first time you'd ever done anything with a girl?
No, I'd kissed girls before, when I was
young. First time was when I was 14, at the Virgo party. Everyone
was kissing everyone.
------
I decided against asking whether that was a girls
only party even though it wasn't clear.
While I was impressed that Samantha was into trying new things,
I doubt it's a trend that's going to catch on, but then again what
do I know.
This was made very clear in a later conversation with Samantha that
was a little off the beaten track in which she told me about a hell
of load more things she's tried some of which to be honest I hadn't
even heard of, and one in particular which I had.
