Whilst life in Nottingham can be a beautiful thing,
there may come a time when a student seeks a little less burger and
a little more glamour.
In the absence of a lottery win, a trip to the Big Apple on a student
budget seems less than plausible; hence, here are a few tips for those
wishing to explore the finer treats of the city.
If you are brave enough to stray from the beaten track of music so
cheesy you grow dairy intolerant and alcopops so rammed with e-numbers
that they make you hallucinate, get your ass into gear and get down
to these glam nightspots.
The Rescue Rooms is a warm venue with a
decidedly laidback ambience - all that's missing amongst the back
catalogues of LP's lining the walls and the purple velvet ceiling
is the scent of opium joss sticks.
For those with no desire for the bohemian, Bar None is recommended
for its cosy basement and funky soul music.
Revolution is a livelier affair for all vodka lovers, who
can sample the countless flavours ranging from Dime Bar to Rhubarb
and Custard.
Some bars require you to set up camp the night before to gain entry;
one such bar is the slick all-rounder Dogma. (Congratulations
to those who locate the concealed toilet door unaided amid the mirrored
walls).
This theme continues in the sophisticated Brass Monkey, where
patrons can - somewhat disturbingly - catch a potentially unfortunate
glance of themselves using the facilities in mirrored cubicles (?!)
Don't be disheartened; happy hour here (and all day Wednesday) means
that the fantastic cocktails are within the reach of mere students.
Market Bar and Lizard Lounge are chic as (Vegas) chips,
but be warned - these bars are definitely the territory of Nottingham's
most beauteous folk. Just check out the bar staff.
For something a little more quirky, visit
Tantra - the humble sofa has been replaced with gloriously
decadent beds.
Don't be fooled into thinking that The Living Room will allow
you in wearing slippers, as this uber-chic bar has a white grand
piano and very glam clientele.
The Pitcher and Piano is another venue that will have fast
lane socialites going weak at the knees. The insides of the enormous
converted church is breathtaking - so long as you overcome the guilt
of getting wrecked in a holy place.
And finally, goodbye Glasshouse - hello funky Quilted Llama
- roll a dice the right way after 11 o'clock and you could be well
on your way to a free shot. Nice.
