Interview
Have you been to Nottingham much before?
Yeah I remember coming to Nottingham Trent University to do a feature on 'My Bloody Valentine'. I love going to gigs in Nottingham. 'Rock City's' one of my favourite venues in the country and I've been pushing to have 'One Live in Nottingham' for just ages and ages. It's a perfect set up and a lovely setting. It's just a really nice city. I've been going to Nottingham since my days on the NME and if anything it's just got better, because now you've got The Social and Selectadisc which takes up a whole street.
Who are you looking forward to seeing?
Well loads of people. I haven't seen 'The Doves' since the start of the year and I'd like to see 'The Vines' because the first time I saw them I didn't think they were anything particularly special live, but they were good at Reading festival. Vendetta Red who I still haven't seen, but the music I've heard is really good.
Are there any tips you'd give to budding young journalists or presenters?
It's very difficult to say. In a way you find your own way in, there is no way I should have ended up at 'Radio One'. Coming from a small village with something like two buses a week I was more determined to find a route out and move to somewhere where I could see gigs. As the record industry stands at the moment, it's full so you have to prove you're the best and do something different.
Anything you would like to add about One Live?
Oh it's a 'Thrill a minute rollercoaster with more live shows than Radio One ever had before.' Can I also plug 'Steve Lamacq's fantasy record industry'? I think it's on a Wednesday (to be confirmed) so if you're in a band and want to know more about the industry get yourself along, it's free. We form a band from people in the audience and then we role play the life of a band. They'll be a press officer, a radio promoter, an A and R person and a manager. We then go through everything that happens in the life of a band and the audience decide whether they would buy the record or not.
