I'm not going to answer the topic question since it's clearly devil's advocate (posed perhaps by the Sheriff of BBC Nottingham!). On the point Nancy from Madrid makes about removing old buildings, is there any defence to demolishing Victoria Station in the 60s to make way for the hidious Victoria Shopping Centre? Using the old station would have made a very posh shopping arcade (something like they did in Swindon with the old steam train works). But no we have to live with 60s eye sores.

Stereotypes

I like watching snooker on television, but why does Anthony Hamilton has to be known as the "Robin Hood of Snooker"? I know that Anthony comes from Gedling and he is Nottingham born and bred like myself, but I think that this phrase is too much of a typecast on Nottingham. People do associate Nottingham with Robin Hood, but I dislike it when people are reffered to as the Robin Hood of something just because they come from Nottingham. If they got rid of that nickname, I would support Anthony a bit more.

Absolutely not! I have lived in and around Nottingham for all of my 41 years and it really p****s me off when people say to me "you must be really fed up with all that Robin Hood c**p by now"... Well, no I'm not. Robin Hood represents one of the first rebels conected with Nottingham, in our country's long history. Nottingham, or Nottingham based people have, over the years, often taken a healthy lead were rebelion of one kind or another has been required. I say "Long live that rebelious spirit that Robin Hood showed us over seven hundred years ago

Nottingham is a great place.....or WAS!! Even I as a mere 25 year old want to know why the council want to destroy all of the beautiful buildings that we HAD!! I can remember them knocking down the 'Flying Horse' (I have a picture of me and my brother looking at the hole they left. And was it 'The Corner Pin' they knocked down to build the, Oh so lovley, 'Disney Store'!! The only things I've have to remind me of what a beautiful town Nottingham once was, are books of old postcards that my dad has brought me, and his and my mums memories, themselves having lived in Nottingham all their lifes. I don't live in Nottingham now, I'm in Madrid (Another beautiful city!) I miss Nottingham so much, but when I go home and see what a mess they're making of the town I'd rather stay away and remember it my way!! It's not just the older Nottinghamese that want Nottingham left as it was!!!!!!!!!!

Nottingham or Yorkshire

In a little church yard in AtHersage, lies the body of Little John. If you visit the parish church in Edwinstow, you will can see the place were both Robin Hood (Hode) and Marian Fitswalter were marryade and if you go into the forest of Sherwood you will find a tree that is thought to be Robin Hoods meeting place. For years Nottingham has had its own beliefe that Robin Hood was a Nottinghamshire born man, while Yorkshire people say he cam from Yorkshire. In the days when Robin Hood lived, all of the midlands were mainley wood land and men could move swiftly from one place to another. So why cant both Yorkshire and Nottingham come to the point that he could have been controling both areas, of Britain at the same time. History has many hidden corners and in time we may know the truth. But it is a fact that he may have lived in both Nottingham and Yorkshire. from one day to another.

As an eight year old, my fondest recollection of Nottingham is my visit to see Robin Hood. That was back in 1962 and the day is still fresh in my mind. I still show my young son the "Robin Hood Club" pin and certificate, which hold an honoured place in my dilapidated, but treasured old scrapbook from that era. As far as I am concerned, Nottingham and Robin Hood are one and will always be that way. Too much of the past is being brushed aside, don't let it happen there.

As a Nottinghamshire born lad I believe the legend of Robin Hood is a source of debate and interest for thousands and the fact that the arguments cannot be settled is part of the attraction. The story highlights and encourages enquiry into that part of history and that is a good thing and if Nottingham can make a bob or two, all the better.

dear old robin hood who for many years has put nottingham on the map. the lace trade brought many people to notts but robin hood will live forever. whether he was real or not(i like to think he was real) he is ours to keep. any other county that dare try to steal him off us are only jealous because their county is too boring to have a hero that is centuries old. when i walk in the woods, i like to think he used to do the same with his band of merry men when nature was flourishing and the only things he had to worry about was the sheriff of nottingham and his men instead of motorbikes running towards you without caring whether they run you over or not.

There is always room in this world for Robin Hood. If the time comes when there - isn't shame on the world. Man or myth, truth or fiction, it's the whole image of someonehelping the less fortunate - taking from the rich to give to the poor. Long Live Sir Robin of Locksley. He shows us that we can make a difference (although we must try more honest ways!)

Who thought this one up then ? I mean what other City or Country would turn it's back on something that makes them seperate from the rest. I have travelled the world and you say to someone Nottingham and the answer you get back is either Robin Hood or Brian Clough. As anybody if they have heard of Leicester or Derby and the responses are less positive. Can you name anything immediately that makes these two Cities stand out? No. Nottingham is growing fast and the facilities and attractions are growing at the same rate. let's use our robin to attract the visitors and then let them see for themselves what else the City and County have to offer

Update the image of Nottingham, but not at the expense of denying our heritage. My ancestors records are found in Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, Nottingham. When my son, at age 13, was ranked 3rd in the US in his first year on the Archery circuit, it seemed he was exercising his heritage. Robin exhibits many admirable traits. Show how these traits are demonstrated in contemporary times. The concept of updating Nottingham's image and dumping Robin are not mutually exclusive. You can keep Robin and update the image. Show the continuity. If you deny our heritage, you deny us. You, in fact, deny that which you are trying to show. Regards.

Of course it is the right image! Why on earth would anyone want it to be different. It doesn't matter if one is young or old, Robin Hood will always be a hero! Lets not deny, children of the future, a beautiful story. Lordanis, of Nottingham stated it well, "If he goes, (Robin Hood) some of the magic of this city goes with him too."

Robin Hood should remain as at the least a legendary figure and focus for the city and tourist trade. Whether we like to admit it or not Robin Hood is the only figure that actually can be proven to put Nottingham and Nottinghamshire on the map. The University, Boots, Raleigh Bikes, Lace, Textiles, Coal, Torvill & Dean etc. are not so identifiable with Nottingham to the world outside the East Midlands. Even in the South East of England I have found people with vague notions of what and where Nottingham is. They are surprised when you mention that Jesse Boot was from Nottingham. Coal for example is associated more with Wales or more northern parts of England. Even Raleigh Bikes are not automatically associated with Nottingham. Robin Hood should remain as a central figure for the industry of attracting the world outside of the region into the City and the County. In other words Robin Hood is a useful set of bones on which to set out the detail of the other aspects of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. To be quite frank as soon as the centuries old legend of Robin Hood is discarded it will take a long time to replace it.

I visited Nottingham early last year (2000) and have always wondered about the legend of Robin Hood - was he real or was he fictional? For me, the question wasn't really answered, but it doesn't matter. He is "part" of Nottingham and "what" Nottingham is. Robin Hood will always be "Nottingham" for everyone knows Nottingham when they hear Robin Hood; How many people give you the same recognition when you say, "you know, where the lace is made!!

I came across this debate purely by chance, while researching background related to Robin Hood. I am in the midst of creating a stage set for a Christmas Panto with the story of "Robin Hood." The play is to be performed in New Westminster, British Columbia, which is on the west coast of Canada. We expect to be sold out in all shows, judging from the ticket sales so far. If "Robin Hood" is such a draw so far away from Nottingham, I would expect that in the town of Nottingham itself, the theme is a fair gift to tourism, and a ready-made "cash cow". I can only conclude that the councillors in favour of purging Robin Hood from the local scene are direct descendents of the original inhabitants, the Snots. You can tell them I said so.

I was recently in a pub about 3 miles out of Sherwood Forest when a conversation between some American tourists caught my attention. "Robin Hood?" the mother said to the father, "he was a land owner, one of the richest in his time". "No he wasn't" replied the daughter (aged about 7), "that was one of the best Disney movies; he was a hero". The story of Robin Hood is still getting told the world over after all this time and someone thinks we should abolish the whole idea just like that. Well done, good plan, I like ruining peoples dreams and pride. "Long live Robin" they chanted at Disney and I'm still chanting with them.

I no longer live in Nottingham, but am a frequent visitor. How can anyone consider getting rid of Robin Hood? It's totally bonkers! What's next? Pulling down "The Trip.." or "the Salutation", or bulldozing the castle? Whoever came up with this should be ashamed of themselves. NCC would be totally barking mad to drop Robin Hood BUT it must be remembered that, as far as can be ascertained from the legends and ballads, Robby probably never came further south than the Don valley. The link with Nottingham is spurious and based solely, as far one can tell, on the Sheriff of Nottingham and Sherwood Forest, or more properly its remains. The Sheriff's bailiwick covered a vast area of the Midlands and South Yorkshire albeit his administrative base was Nottingham and Sherwood Forest, at the time of the legend, ran, more or less from York to Leicester. I say keep Robin, but as one of the symbols. What about some truly Nottinghamshire grown heroes? Suggestions welcomed I am sure.

I am a chauffeur living in Perth, Western Australia. I have been here for 34 years. Whenever I pick up a passenger from the airport, there is a comment on my English accent. The usual questions follow; where did I come from, how long have I been here etc. If I tell them that Nottingham is my home town there is usually a blank look but as soon as I mention Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest and the Sherrif of this fair city a look of realisation crosses their faces. Robin Hood is synonymous with Nottingham and should for ever remain so.

I see my friend Ray Walker from Adelaide Australia, has commented on this subject and I can't let him get ahead of me so I am putting my two pennorth in. We grew up with Robin Hood. As Ray says, He is Nottingham! He wears Robin Hood Green, what would you call the colour if you got rid of him? I really think this is a wind-up, no-one has any intention of getting rid of Robin's image and rightly so, they would be bonkers if they did. Robin is Nottingham's legend and everyone around the world knows about Robin Hood and then how could I tell them I'm Maid Marion if there was no more Robin Hood? They've got rid of all the lovely old buildings, next thing you know they will be knocking the Castle down! Surely they won't destroy good old Robin too. It's the most stupid suggestion I've ever heard, Robin Hood is a part of our history and we should be proud of it not destroy it to give an image of moving forward and if any of you are too blind to see that then think of it in terms of without Robin Hood, Nottingham would lose most of it's tourist industry and a heck of a lot of money that it creates, so the idea is all round ridiculous!!!!

I was fortunate to visit your lovely city last summer. My children were so intrigued with the legend of Robin Hood. I think the city should capitalize even more on the Robin Hood Legend. Outside of the statue @ the castle it was difficult to find believable Robin Hood acknowledgements. I visited the Tales of Robin Hood and the Sherwood Forest. I found that there could be much improvement in the delivery of the message & history. Overall.. Nottingham is the heart of the "real" english people. I love the square and the Pubs. What they wouldn't do for their own Robin Hood, Earl of Loxley!!Nottingham is so lucky to have a legend like Robin Hood which is known across the planet. His tales are an example to rich and poor alike. To the rich and powerful, "greed will be your undoing". To the poor, "in unity lies justice".

I think Robin Hood is the hero of the Midlands, and all those Nottingham folks who want to see him taken away are barmy! I only wish there was more of the original Sherwood Forest left!

Robin Hood is as much a part of Nottingham as Silent Night is a part of Bavaria. Governments may come and go , but Robin Hood will always remain. Robin Hood took back from the overtaxing government and returned the common persons' money back to them. Robin was the first supply side economist and the father of all tax reductions.

I am so sad that in this 'modern' new labour/new age we seems compelled to rid ourselves of every vestige of our history and heritage.

We wouldn't be here without it. It makes us what we are - good or bad.

We should celebrate it. Cultures denied their historical and cultural roots demand to have them restored - yet here we are willing to throw our baby out with the bathwater.

Keep Robin Hood - and find a new home for the wonderful, now closed, 'World of Robin Hood' while you're at it!

How thought this up? You cannot get rid of Robin Hood. Everytime I enter Nottinghamshire, I sing "Robin Hood, Robin Hood". Call me nuts, but this guy has been a hero since childhood. I live in Mansfield, the centre of the ancient forest of Sherwood. Scrapping the legend that gives this area its identity would be a travesty. Look at all of the literature, plays and films based on the Robin Hood legend. Everyone world wide knows of Robin Hood. He is synonymous with Nottingham and Sherwood Forest. Without Robin there would be no Nottinghamshire.

I would have to say, Robin Hood was an outlaw and had a price on his head, but if he was alive today he would be good box office and I would have him on the radio show I host, no problems. I guess the first question I would ask him was what music he likes to listen to. I hope it isnt Greensleeves, that would definately not make the Radio One playlist, not unless it was a remix by someone like fatboy or groove rider. Which would lead me nicely into my next question. Wouldn't the merry men be better with more up-to-date, with-it names, like fat boy john or groove rider scarlet. And merry men! Come on. That should be posse, surely? To finish, I would ask Robin what he would do if he was dictator for a day and maybe he would like to stay and help a phone-in contestant on my News Quiz of the Year. I'm sure he would offer some assistance to my listeners, as Robin is well known for helping the less fortunate.

Its interesting that the only city in Britain to have a criminal as its most revered figure also has the highest crime rate in England. It always seems very ironic to me that the Robin Hood statue's bow is always being stolen.

Having said all that, I agree with everybody else that Robin Hood must be kept. Unlike the ubiquitous mindless vandals of modern Nottingham, Robin Hood was a hero with unending appeal.

We have an expression in Australia that describes perfectly the person/s who came up with this idea --- Brain Dead Wombat!!! Can you imagine if we tried to destroy the Ned Kelly legend? And Ned Kelly certainly doesn't have the romantic appeal or integrity of Robin Hood. Like many of your contributors, I was originally born in Nottingham and while people I meet have no idea where Nottingham is, they definitely know of its association with the Robin Hood legend. If the legend hadn't of existed (???), some advertising executive would have made a fortune by doing so!!!

Being born & bredd in Nottingham and having spent the last 16 years in Asia, i can assute you that Nottingham stands for 2 things Brian Clough's Forest Side, and Robin Hood, no mention of lace, Boots, Bicycles, Salvation Army founder, Torvill & Dean, or even Derek Randall, so don't lets be stupid, we must keep Robin Hood and encourage Richard Green to make a come back!

If you Scrap Robin Hood and then mention Nottingham, the response may well be "Where is that then"? Is that really what this is about, or is it trying to clean up an image? Leave History alone and keep Robin and Nottingham on the map. I've travelled around over the years and haven't lived in Nottingham since 1961 when I first joined the Army but I am proud to say that Nottinham is where I hail from. As many have already said and I get the same respose, "Ah Robin Hood Country".

Robin is an essential part of nottingham. No matter where you are in the world if they haven't heard of Notts, they sure have heard of Robin. i for one am proud of him.

We should keep him. We keep destroying our 'history'. We can express our modern and futuristic image but still need to maintain our links with and sense of history. The whole makes Nottingham and to discard such a major part of its history would be like chopping off a limb.

Don't you dare scrap Robin Hood. England has a great and diverse heritage. Removing Robin Hood would harm Nottinghams history and reputation. History is an important part of our lives, it helps us look back and consider how we can improve ourselves as a society and celebrate important events. So basically hands off, Robin Hood should stay for another few thousand years and more!

Leave Robin alone, he's been here a long time, apart from his arrows being stolen as soveneirs, he is one of the sights people come to see, i always look forward to my visit

Its all well and good saying that we need to move with the 21st Century and perhaps Nottingham needs a new image aside from Robin Hood, but are you really asking us to give up what makes Nottingham great, our history, our heritage and our cosmopolitan culture? Byron, D.H. Lawrence, Robin Hood, they all make up part of that culture and to take any of it would be to take a part of us away. I am a Brit, currently residing in the USA and yes when i tell people I am from Nottingham, they all cry "Ah, Robin Hood". I long to come home, and back to Nottingham and I hope to see none of it changed or gone especially the omnipresent Mr. Hood. We can move forwards without destoying the past. Long live the Snots (yes Snots, not a typo)

You can't scrap Robin Hood, the statue is a focal point, it ahs prsonal family history. my granddad was chief constable in the city and of the memories i have of him are one of him with the statue when it carried its arrow. my nanny, his wife would be up n arms about this, although not a native of the city, she had strong feeling about the city. i moved away 20 years ago but still identify with the city and the symbolism involved with robin hood, and i feel that the legend is part of what makes the city and its people the place it is. Once again political correctness has run amok!! I thought it was bad in the States but this is ridiculous! Robin Hood should not only be preserved but celebrated. It is an integral part of English legend and harms absolutely no one. Traveling through Britian a few years ago, Nottingham was one of our stops just because of Robin Hood. The forest was mysterious, the town delightful and there was magic in the air...all because of the legend of Robin Hood.

When i decided to come to Nottingham from Greece to study was because I only knew this city in England due to Robin Hood.If he goes, some of the magic of this city goes with him too.I say keep him forever
