Every year the
entire third grade of our beachside elementary school studies Robin
Hood. Half are transients receiving government assistance. Yet,
most know the legend and all are intrigued that there is still a
Sheriff in Nottingham, that a perfect archery shot is still called
a "robinhood," and that there are tombs for Robin, Little John,
Will Scarlet and, yes, wicked Prince John. One year they donated
money to adopt an oak through the Sherwood Forest Trust. Why? Because
they believe in the adventure and romance and derring-do of Robin,
Marion, and the band of Merry Men. Do away with Robin Hood? It's
not possible. The children of the world won't let Robin Hood be
forgotten.

What lunatic
suggested getting rid of Robin Hood. Any way for generations he
will be remembered, you can`t erase it from the minds of people
all over the world. Here in Victoria mention Nottingham and its
Robin Hood country, like Liverpool and its The Beatles. Leave it
as it is I say.

When it comes
down to it, Robin Hood was a lawbreaker and it is not a good role
model to set for our children or to have as an image to present
to the rest of the World that Nottingham supports lawbreaking.

You can't scrap
Robin. In North America we have a baking flour called Robin Hood
Flour. Many a child has amused his or herself by calling the grocery
shop and asking "Do you have Robin Hood by the bag?" What we do
without Robin?

It's about time
you people stopped trying to destroy history, destroy robin Hood
you might aswell destroy Nottingham. How do you think Nottingham
become so famous. If it was not for Robin Hood i would not have
taken Archery up, and gone on to become european Gold and World
Bronze Field Archery Medalist.
Put your efforts into dealing with modern day problems in nottingham

New York has
the Statue of Liberty, Paris has the Eiffel Tower, London has Big
Ben, and we have ROBIN HOOD. All these have something in common,
they all have a landmark. If you planned to scrap the Eiffle Tower,
would it be Paris anymore? This is the same as scrapping ROBIN HOOD.
I've liked him ever since I was a kid. I used to pretend to be him,
I used to copy Walt Disneys version of ROBIN HOOD. So DON'T SCRAP
ROBIN HOOD.

if ya asking
me, the closest thing we have nowadays to robin hood is a pimp...
Nah...think about it, the businessmen (the rich) come to his toms
(the poor) and give them money, then he gives the money back to
the poor, his women.
And incidentally, his worst enemy was the local sheriff ;¬)

Just think about
it, without Robin Hood we would be missing so much in Nottingham:
- those green felt hats with the feather in - those crazy plastic
pens in the shape of an arrow - the tales of Robin Hood - lots of
archery - maid marian and her merry men (the kids tv show) - lots
of medieval nick-nacks they sell in the tourist info centre, the
tales of robin hood shop and the castle - the sherif of nottingham
- statues - a nice story - sherwood forest - I could go on and on
and on, look nottingham would be much much duller without that crazy
legendry dude. we take him for granted but he is known worldwide
and he lives in the hearts of the nottingham people, ahhh. give
the guy a chance!

A few years
ago,my wife and I were on holiday in Switzerland, and in one of the
clubs we visited,I was dragged onto the stage,(all in good fun),
and had to copy the previous artist by yodeling. They asked where
we came from and when I said near Nottingham there were shouts from
the audience, all nationalities, of Robin Hood and Brian Clough.
Why get rid of something that is known worldwide. There is always
some idiot who wants to destroy our heritage and belittle everything

We shouldn't
scrap Robin Hood because he is part of Nottingham. I've grown up
with Robin Hood when i was little my Grandma and Grandad used to
take me and my brother to the tales of Robin Hood all the time and
we thought it was brilliant, having this person who robbed from
the rich to help the poor and i want my children to learn about
Robin Hood. People always think of Nottingham when they hear the
name Robin Hood so if you take away Robin Hood Nottingham won't
be Nottingham.

Robin Hood is
still as relevant today as ever. He was all for helping ordinary
Nottingham folk by giving them the ability to pay their way in the
days when money was short. In Nottingham we are learning from the
rest of the world and using Robin Hood as an example by joining
Credit Unions. Save and borrow money with your neighbours and help
local people help themselves. Not necessarily stealing from the
rich to give to the poor - more helping the ordinary people to help
themselves!

Robin hood is
a historical figure and if it is done away with, we will be destroying
our heritage. Everyone may be sick of hearing about him, but he
is what helps us survive here. Isn't that what he tried to do to
begin with? The statue needs to be repaired, but not destroyed.
We cannot destroy our heritage.

It wouldn't
be the first time Robin Hood was banned somewhere in the British
Isles. "In 1555 the Scottish parliament prohibited any further annual
celebrations in which there were impersonations of Robin Hood, Little
John, the abbot of Unreason and the Queen of May. Those who participated
in choosing such within royal burghs were made liable to five years'
imprisonment; those chosen were to be banished from the realm...."
--quoted from "Robin Hood", by J.C. Holt.
According to
another author, Jeffrey Singman, when the ban on Robin Hood plays
was restated some years later, there was a riot in Edinburgh.
Robin Hood
has always been a model of fair play and good manners. But he has
also been the king of misrule, and that can be a source of alarm
for government officials.

Hi! I live
in the US, but I came to your site hoping to find a bit of Nottinghamshire
where I visited some years back. I went there while vacationing
because of all the wonderful stories I saw related to Robin Hood.
It would be so disappointing if you diminished his legend. He was
one of the first "good guys" I had a crush on. That was when I was
a young teenager. Now, in my middle years, I still think fondly
of those stories; I still would like to come back to Nottinghamshire,
because that's where Robin Hood lived, and became a legend.

Robin Hood is
very much alive in peoples hearts and imagination as this debate
clearly shows. Why must council officials (I'm presuming this came
from such a source once again) persist in trying to disassociate
themselves with the legendary figure. The response these suggestions
always receive shows time after time how important Robin is to people
the world over. It is time the city acknowleged our heritage and
promoted the association with pride.

This is a follish
idea and one, which I think is practically impossible. You cannot
"scrap" a legend which has been inherent in British Culture for
so many hundreds of years. I am surprised that someone has actually
even considered this idea, as economically for Nottingham this makes
no sense at all. Most of the visitors to nottingham come because
of the Robin Hood legend. Scrap this, and the economy will suffer
accordingly. Why don't we "scrap" the person who came up with this
ridiculous idea and see how they feel about not existing anymore.

O.K. What nut
case came up with the idea of scrapping Robin Hood? Known forever

I've lived in
Nottingham since I was born and life wouldn't have been the same
if my dad hadn't taken me to the Castle and to the Tales of Robin
Hood and to see the statue. Its brilliant and you can never lat

famous. You say "Nottingham" to someone in any country and they
say "Robin Hood". If you want to get rid of anything get rid of

What new image
do they have in mind? Only thing that springs to mind is a carry-over
from the 20th century - fish'n chips, lager louts, pewking in the
streets, etc. What one-brain cell moron came up with this notion
of getting rid of Robin Hood? It just illustrates the level of degeneration
in the species, which I suspected for a long time. We are considering
moving to Nottinghamshire and hope this interfering busybody gets
put in his/her place. (I suspect they're on the Council - they're
usually the ones that screw everything up for posterity!) (I'm an
ex-pat Brit)
