Roadtrip
- Road To Nowhere Having worked for several years with INXS, music executive
Chris Murphy ventured out by forming Petrol Records. His aim was to create themed
sequenced albums be they country themes like Brazil or Cuba, or genre's - cocktail,
lounge. Road to Nowhere is supposed to be his ultimate
drive album. Songs featured are Talking Heads title track, Beach Boys Do It Again
and Elton John's Rocket Man. But don't expect the
originals. These are covers by artists unknown in the UK. Atom, Thriller Jill
and Neimo are the prime collaborators. Success varies.
Thriller Jill is a case in point - Let's Stick Together doesn't work, Pump It
Up is much better in a hi NRG style. Worst culprit is Neimo whose reinterpretations
of The Doors Hello I Love You and Velvet Underground's Vicious are a disaster.
A mixed bag. 3/5 Grant-Lee
Phillips - Nineteeneighties More covers, this time from the former leader
of Grant Lee Buffalo.
This isn't your normal selection
of cover versions, featuring songs originally recorded by Pixies, The Church,
Robyn Hitchcock and Nick Cave. Those most familiar
will be Echo's The Killing Moon, Cure's Boys Don't Cry and Smiths Last Night I
Dreamed That Somebody Loved Me. Stripped back, acoustic,
it's a new way to listen to some old favourites and works better than the Roadtrip
project. 3.5/5 |
