It’s not easy being a singer/songwriter in 2003.
Of course, it’s never been easy, just look at the fate of Nick Drake who was only lauded after death.
But in 2003 there seem to be so many accomplished singer/songwriters just waiting for that big break.
Josh Rouse, Elliot Smith, John Mayer – they’ve all received plenty of good criticism without the necessary mega sales to turn them into a Springsteen.
The same fate seems to await Pete Yorn. Day I Forgot is as accomplished as Musicforthemorningafter but whether it’s got that killer cut is another matter.
He certainly plays to all those homely good old American family values.
The video for Come Back Home has that made in college feel, shows dad’s high school photo and even slips in a cover shot of Bruce’s The River.
As a special bonus we even get Yorn’s version of Suspicious Minds. It’s not Presley, it’s not the Fine Young Cannibals but then again it’s really not that out of the ordinary. It’s a decent take on a good song.
Sounding like a cross between Echo’s Ian McCulloch and Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Yorn has gone for that modern sound – cue the fuzzy vocals of Carlos.
It’s more accessible than its predecessor, indeed Day I Forgot is definitely a grower. But I doubt it’ll grow into a major seller.
