Chances are if you blinked within the last few weeks you’d have missed the release of Long Gone Before Daylight.
It certainly seems that this first offering since 1998 has been allowed to slip out almost unnoticed.
That’ll disappoint the Swedes since this album represents a change in style.
Pop friendly tunes like Love Fool are replaced by a more mellow Cardigans.
The template is set from opener Communication. It’s early evening, slump into a chair after a long walk, music.
Ditto You’re The Storm which hints towards alt country.
On the whole, the style suits the band. Tracks like Please Sister certainly get the full production work – strings and style – it’s ready made for the movie soundtrack.
If there’s a complaint it’s that the album could be better balanced. A few more uptempo numbers would have been welcomed.
As it is, the closest we get to rock out Cardigans is A Good Horse and For What It’s Worth, and that’s barely letting your hair down.
Credit due for trying something different but you can hear why Long Gone Before Daylight seems to be living up to its name.
