Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson might not be the first name you associate with jazz but the influence of the genre on providing samples and back beats for the current dance scene cannot be overlooked.
While US jazz artists might still earn respect, the British scene of the 60s has been largely overlooked.
Peterson’s quest is to balance things with the first of what he hopes will be a series of compilations.
Certainly, Impressed puts to CD a series of tunes which have, until now, only been available on vinyl and then at a high price, such is their rarity.
The best way to describe the sound of this collection to none-aficionados is to recall the music from Michael Caine’s Alfie. Or rather the score performed by Sonny Rollins as opposed to the Bacharach/David title song.
Although the majority of these pieces come form the late 60s, the feel is that of swinging Carnaby Street.
There’s uptempo Tubby Hayes Qunitet with Down In The Village and hard bop from Ronnie Ross.
But the standout has to be Graham Collier’s Lullaby For A Lonely Child. Oboe, sax and trombone combining to give that round midnight feel.
You can just see Caine turning up his collar by the banks of the Thames and wandering into the distance in search of another Jack the Lad conquest.
Maybe not essential but highly satisfying nonetheless.
Impressed is released on Universal Jazz 064 749
