Sneaking out two days before Christmas, you get the idea this is an album the record company had little faith in.
Yolanda, according to the accompanying biographical literature, is the biggest thing to hit gospel music since…well, she’s bigger than Mica Paris anyway.
In the States that is. In the UK she means zilch, and that’s probably going to continue with Believe.
Yolanda Adams has a great voice, there’s no denying. She probably makes an inspirational sight and sound in concert.
But when you listen to opening song, Never Give Up, you just think Whitney Houston.
Indeed, given that Yolanda Adams first started cutting records in 1987 you get the idea she was brought up listening to the Houston gospel clan.
The title track is instantly forgettable although Fo’sho and Thank You show there’s promise.
But too many of the tracks have production and arrangements which date them to the mid-80s.
It’s pleasant but you expect a more.
Part Oleta Adams, part Anita Baker – great singers but where are they now?
Yolanda may continue to dominate the US gospel scene, but I don’t believe Believe will be the crossover album she’s looking for.
Believe is released on Elektra 7559-62690
