October 2002
Christine Collister / Kathryn Williams
Christine Collister
Keep running Christine or the peacock will catch you

Eva Cassidy and Norah Jones might be flavour of the month but these singers can easily give them a run for their money.

FACTS

Christine Collister used to sing backing vocals for Richard Thompson and for many years was in a popular duo with Clive Gregson.

She sang the title to the BBC series The Live And Love Of A She-Devil.

Kathryn Williams says many of the songs on Old Low Light are inspired by travelling - Mirrorball about being on the A1, Daydream and Saunter about being on a train.

Christine Collister - Into The Light
It might be a terrible thing to say but it does get my goat that Eva Cassidy continues to have praise heaped upon her when there are plenty of other decent singers around.

I know you shouldn't speak ill of the dead and I'm not going to. Eva Cassidy had a terrific voice...but Christine Collister's is just as good and she gets hardly any coverage.

That position is unlikely to change with the release of Into The Light, despite the fact it's probably her strongest collection of songs since Blue Aconite.

If you swoon to Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold, trust me, you'll be knocked out by Christine's rendition of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (yes the U2 track).

What's even more encouraging is the way Collister's writing skills are developing. Opener "Ashlands" is top drawer.

But don't worry, class covers are still evident. As well as U2, Collister takes on Roddy Frame and Paul Simon and wins.

Give the girl a break and bring one of Britain's premier voices into the light.

Into The Light is released on Topic Records TSCD1002

Kathryn WilliamsKathryn Williams - Old Low Light
For one horrible moment I thought it had all gone wrong for Kathryn Williams.

A listen to the first single off this album (No One Takes You Home) and it sounded decidedly ordinary. But give it a few spins and the lyrics and tune start to win you over.

Once into the Williams style you're hooked completely.

Acoustic guitar and vocals are complimented by strings and double bass.

Having been nominated for a Mercury music prize with her Little Black Numbers CD the pressure was clearly on.

Williams has adequately risen to the challenge.

Love is very much in vogue but it's not all plain sailing. Loneliness and dodgy relationships (Wolf) are all tackled here.

Definitely a good week for the ladies.
