FACTS

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it's often called "Mothers Day" it has no connection with the American festival of that name.

Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family.

Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and home made cards to their mothers.

Why do we love our mothers? We've been pounding the streets of Nottinghamshire with our clipboards searching for a definitive answer.

------

Once the clipboard is seen in your grasp it's not suprising that, in general, people tend to shun you - as if you've got some infectious disease.

I love Brenda Robertze...
quote Because she was there for me when I went blind after my brain tumour. quote Natasha.

However, once you mention mothers and love most people soften.

Of the 100 interviewees the younger generation were quite happy to admit that they loved their mums "because she does the ironing" and "because she washes my clothes."

They were also more keen to point out their mums financial role in the relationship. Michael Miginley put it best: "I love my mum (Bridgie) because she buys me things all the time."

Older survey participants took more time over their answers and also tended to be more soppy, describing their mums as loving, caring and special.

I love Gillian Derhan...
quote Because she set me up for life in the small amount of time I had with her. quote Joe.

Gender didn't seem to make a significant difference - male or female - 92% of people questioned love their mother.

We'd like to think the other 8% had just had a little row.

Below you can see the full results of our survey. However, some mums need a special mention: Mary T Jones "you're a legend" (according to your son David). Thank you Therasa McCready for giving your daughter her love of music. Finally, Moira Martinsons and
Cynthia Davis you're the best mums in the world! (so say Sarah and Russ).
