The BBC Nottingham website was honoured with the
job of naming one of Nottingham's 15 new trams that are going into
service shortly.
We asked you to help us.
Some of our favourite suggestions included Frank Robinson (aka Xylophone
Man), the castle (although we didn't think it would move very fast),
the Hooded Tram and just simply Duck.
From the 100s of entries we came up with a shortlist of four having
been told that the tram must be named after a real person of history.
These were the choices...
Watson Fothergill
Fothergill was the son of a wealthy lace manufacturer and merchant.
He developed a distinctive picturesque style, influenced by the
European Gothic architecture he saw on his many visits to the continent.
Harold Larwood
Harold Larwood was born in Nuncargate. A bowler of great speed combined
with considerable control, it made him a force to be reckoned with
in the years between 1926 and 1933.
DH Lawrence
Lawrence is undoubtedly one of the most important English writers
of the 20th century. His novel 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' is one
of the most notorious books to have been published.
Sir Frank Bowden
In 1887 Frank Bowden was told he had only months to live. Rather
than accept hs fate, he chose to follow the advice of his doctor
who told him to take up cycling to save his life. To improve his
health, he went to Raleigh Street, where he found 12 men in a small
workshop producing three cycles a week. Bowden then decided to buy
the workshop and the Raleigh Cycle Company was founded.
In the event DH Lawrence won the day with 39% of
the vote.
Sir Frank Bowden recorded 28%, Harold Larwood 18%
and Watson Fothergill 15%.
Thank you for voting.
