Notts based Raleigh has announced an initial construction
of 2,004 bicycles that'll each have a unique production number stamped
on a plaque.
But the bike won't be exactly like the Chopper
of old.
Raleigh haven't yet released any pictures of their
new look design but have said there'll be one significant change.
The red-lined tyres, the "ape hanger"
handlebars, elongated seat and back rest will all be in place.
But...there'll be no gear stick in the crossbar.
For safety reasons the gears are being moved to
the handlebars.
It'll also be a lot lighter being made from a lightweight
alloy frame instead of steel.
Raleigh, which transferred production from Notts
to the Far East just over a year ago, is confident it's onto a retro-winner.
Loz Coz, the company's product manager, says: "It's
taken us nine months to redesign the new Chopper and we know it's
going to prove as popular as it did in the Seventies."
The new bikes are due to go on sale in April.
Here's another big difference from the 70s - the
initial 2,004 will cost £249.99. Subsequent Choppers, without
a plaque, will retail at £199.99.
