FACTS

300 children were affected in the incident.

New research suggests the illness might have been brought on by a pesticide which had been sprayed on the field.

A report from 1980 concluded the illness was a result of mass hysteria.

The Hollinwell incident remains one of the strangest events ever to happen in Great Britain.

In July 1980, almost 300 children who were competing in a brass band competition in a field near Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, were hit by vomiting, runny noses and sore eyes.

The cause of the children's symptoms was never pinpointed, however, health authorities at the time suggested it was a result of mass hysteria.

Even though it took place over 20 years ago, the incident continues to puzzle experts and the local community alike.

Read about the Kirkby-in-Ashfield phenomenon.
