Chinese New Year officially falls on Saturday 1st February this year, and is calculated by the lunar calendar, so it changes every year.

Chinese families try to get together for a family feast on New Year's Eve, called chuxi, just as most British families do for Christmas.

But the festival, also called Spring Festival, lasts for 15 days so there is plenty of chance to celebrate if you don't manage a party on New Year's Eve itself.

In Nottinghamshire, there are several events to consider:

Events
Lion dance through city centre
The East England Chinese Association will have a lion dance show in the city centre on New Year's Day, Saturday 1st February.

The dance starts outside Hang Sang Restaurant at 1.00pm. Then the lion team will move from the restaurant towards the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, where it will perform another show.

East of England Chinese Association
The association's festivities will take place at the Holme Pierrepont function room on 4th February at 7pm. There's no charge to enter, but if you'd like dinner it will cost you £25.

You can expect fireworks, lion dancing and the performance of the Chinese New Year song.

Contact Halina Hung on 0115 969 1660 for information or tickets.

The Notts Chinese Welfare Association
On Tuesday, 28th February there will be a chance to taste some Chinese food, see a Tai-Chi demonstration, play Chinese games and Arts and Crafts. The event takes place in The Cecil Roberts Room, The Angel Row Gallery from 11.00am - 4.00pm.

For members of the Welfare Association there is a New Year meal at Dynasty Restaurant, Mansfield Road from 12.00pm, Sunday 2nd February.

Nottingham Chinese Christian Church
On Sunday 2nd February there will be a special service at St. Nicholas Church opposite The Peoples College on Maid Marian Way.

The Pastor of the Church Chiu Chung will conduct the service at 14:30pm. It will be spoken in Mandarin, Cantonese and English.

The service will finish at 16:30pm where special Chinese snacks will be served.
